Internet Messaging and Platform Administrator

Description of Work:

  • Develop script, software architecting, design, development, testing, and implementation services to support the Internet Messaging Hubs (gateways).
  • Test, build and implement the upgrade of the Internet Mail Hub architecture to the
    Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 infrastructure platform on virtual servers.
  • Install and configure applications on Linux servers using an Ansible or YAML Playbook to automate and quickly reproduce RHEL 7's system configuration to write the roles to handle different installs using group and host-based variables.
  • Support the existing Internet Mail Architecture, update code, test, configure and implement new or changed fail-over software solutions and tools that are necessary to support Internet Messaging applications in the infrastructure;
  • Develop and document configuration changes or necessary upgrades for: Sendmail, SQLMaestro, Alias Service, Postfix, and PureMessage Email filtering system for spam and virus control for the testing of Internet Mail Hubs.
  • Integrate and validate the developed software, ensuring all major configuration, release and maintenance levels are at the highest approved software version levels for implementation on the SSA network. Any changes in hardware, network, operating system or other applications will require retesting and validation in the lab. In-house developed routines and scripts will be updated and maintained using the languages identified in item g, below;
  • Design, build, implementation or changes to ad-hoc in-house mail reports using C++, Perl, PHP, Java, Apache or SQL for the Internet Mail Hubs that will answer management questions related to potential workload scenarios;
  • Incorporate, test and validate procedures to the existing architecture that will enhance or simplify the current processes, aligning with policy of internal agency partners
  • Research, document and recommend best practices for Email routing using the Internet messaging applications to improve efficiency. The contractor will collaborate with internal and external partners to research best practices.
  • Provide Operations Support that includes performing daily backups, building and maintaining Virtual Machine (VMs).
  • Serve as a technical resource for opening support tickets with software vendors (i.e. Sophos) and will track and manage open technical support tickets with this vendor, updating agency management on progress as requested.
  • Develop customized messaging as needed by the agency (e.g. surveys, policy configuration settings for Internet public web site, etc.).
  • Develop, refine and use tools to create statistics and reports on the Internet Mail service.
  • Use Splunk software tool to resolve issues and gather information (e.g. perform searches, track bad email attachments, search for recipients of malicious messages, accumulate statistics).
  • Manage the Sendmail Log archive and the PureMessage Log file archive files. Maintain code and interface to perform log file searches;
  • Meet with agency security technical representatives and participate in security discussions, and projects.
  • Assist in the development of SMTP Authorization to provide mail access for applications moving to, or being built in, the cloud
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve internet mail routing and security issues with outside agencies and messaging partners
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve internet message transmission issues identified by monitoring tools that send alert messages to technical staff when message queues accumulate in servers.
Basic Qualifications:
Minimum knowledge, skills, abilities needed.
Systems Administrator Level 3

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field and 6 years of related work experience or Master's degree in a technical field and 4 years of related work experience or 11 years of related work experience in lieu of a degree
Systems Administrator Level 4
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field and 10 years of related work experience or Master's degree in a technical field and 8 years of related work experience or 14 years of related work experience in lieu of a degree
Basic Requirements for both levels;
  • 5 years Redhat Enterprise Linux v6.x/7.x Operating System experience
  • 2 years of experience using YAML Ansible
  • Must be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Position of Public Trust

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these skills will be given preferential consideration.

  • Application planning experience that will facilitate the migration of the applications to another data center
  • Software design, development, testing, integration and deployment experience that eliminated single points of failure, mitigated communication transmission weaknesses, complied with agency network and security guidelines and policies, integrated applications to reduce costs and minimized customization,was fully documented, including all changes and are integrated into the division Disaster Recovery Plan
  • Experience with interface design, development, testing, integration and deployment that are compliant with SSA standards and best practices
  • Experience with system security design, development, testing, integration and deployment that are compliant with defined security policies
  • Experienceworking with software application developers who develop applications that will interface with the internet messaging applications
  • Experience with integration of applications that run in a multi-platform, cooperative processing computing environment (i.e. large-scale IBM-compatible mainframes, mid-tier platforms, an IBM-compatible IWS/LAN, Intranet, and the Internet);
  • Experience with the installation and configuration of applications using YAML Ansible Language
  • Extensive experience with shell and Perl scripting and with C/C++
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, routing, subnets, and secure protocols such as SSL and SSH
  • Experience with hardening and protecting of the Linux OS using Access Control and McAfee Enterprise Policy Orchestrator (EPO), meeting CIS requirements
  • Experience in troubleshooting software application issues, working with Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) software developer support personnel to resolve software configuration issues or integration problems.
  • Experience in writing queries, field extractions, and producing reports and dashboards with Splunk.
