Interaction Designer 2/3

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking experienced Interaction Designers 2/3 to work within our team of qualified, diverse individuals. The position is located in Fairfax, VA.

The people at Northrop Grumman work on the hardest, most complex problems the world has ever seen. These complex problems require excellent user experiences, because the data is dense and overwhelming when not intentionally designed to be useful. Our users make difficult decisions and solve challenging problems that keep people around the world safe. To support our users and their missions, we have assembled a multi-disciplinary team of UX practitioners focused on building the right systems and services and in a way that work well for the users.

Our interaction designers create trends by working in our user-centered design process to give color, life, and originality to the insights and breakthroughs that come from great user research. Working collaboratively with user researchers, you will instantiate ideas as prototypes, of all levels of fidelity, so that you can test them with users. The most important thing that you do as an interaction designer on this team is to listen. Listen to program managers so that you can help them see the value of excellent user experiences and help them implement the practice of user-centered design. Listen to users so that you can find ways to make them more productive in their work, to remove their frustrating barriers to effectiveness, and when possible to redesign their work to make the most of their skills and knowledge. And listen to your own teammates so that you can help them practice user-centered design. You learn the jargon and purpose behind the customers' priorities, so that you know the implications of their strategic goals on your work. You often find yourself in discussions regarding the value of design thinking and feel energized when you teach others the methods and tools. You apply your skills in empathizing to your team too, to learn the dynamics of the team and how to work best with each individual.

You know your strengths and weaknesses and love to flex your design muscles. You will spend your time working directly on a project to grow their user-centered design practice by leading collaborative design exercises, making decisions rooted in the science behind the user experience, and iterating on design artifacts. You are capable of working on user research activities where you engage with customers and users to gather, distill, and share mission insights so that the development team has a better understanding of what problems to solve. You work hand-in-hand with the development team to construct innovative, yet practical, interactions that meet the users' information needs. Occasionally, you will help devise strategic design and development approaches outside of your primary project to help grow our business.

Basic Qualifications:

■BQs for an Interaction Designer 2 are a Bachelor's degree in human–computer interaction, IxD, UX design, human factors, cognitive or behavioral science, psychology, anthropology, computer science, or similar field with two years' experience.

■ BQs for an Interaction Designer 3 are a Bachelor's degree in human–computer interaction, IxD, UX design, human factors, cognitive or behavioral science, psychology, anthropology, computer science, or similar field.

■ Experience with executing user-centered design approaches on projects.

■ Experience creating and communicating clearly via abstract diagrams and models of tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, product wireframes, and prototypes.

■ Ability to conduct user research and design exercises, such as field observations, user interviews, focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research, contextual inquiry, design studios, and card sorting.

■ Good verbal and written communication skills.

■ Experience working among a software-development team.

■ U.S. citizenship required. .

Preferred Qualifications:

■ Master's degree in human–computer interaction, IxD, UX design, human factors, cognitive or behavioral science, psychology, anthropology, computer science, or similar field.

■ Demonstrable success and hands-on experience creating and executing user-centered design approaches on existing or new projects, pursuits, or research opportunities.

■ Demonstrable success and hands-on experience creating and communicating clearly via abstract diagrams and models of tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, product wireframes, and prototypes of all kinds of fidelity.

■ Demonstrable success and hands-on experience conducting and leading user research and design exercises, such as field observations, user interviews, focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research, contextual inquiry, design studios, and card sorting.

■ Demonstrable success communicating the value of user-centered design and design thinking to customers, users, program managers, executive leaders in large and small groups.

■ Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

■ Demonstrable success working in a multidisciplinary team in an Agile software development environment.

■ Active U.S. Secret to Top Secret SCI security clearance with polygraph clearance
