Grinder - Tool Cutter A

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Plan grinding operations and set up and operate various grinding machines to grind a variety of work pieces including tools, cutters and jig and fixture components to exacting tolerances.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Manual, semi automatic, automatic tool and cutter grinders and surface, cylindrical, internal, lipping grinders, drill press, lapper, bench grinders, wheel dressers, crush roller, hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, and measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators sinebars, calipers, optical comparator and safety glasses

MATERIAL: Verniers surface gauges, protractors, scales, jigs & fixtures. All ferrous non ferrous metal work pieces & tools such as broaches, reamers, cutters, jigs, fixtures, punches dies, arbors, etc., emery cloth, stones, solvents.

WORKING PROCEDURE: The following are the usual major job duties but this description does not preclude the performance of the other duties by the incumbent, nor the question being raised on the proper rate of pay for the assignment:

  1. Receive work assignment from supervisor.

  2. Read and follow safety regulations and MI package including drawings, change notices, sketches, operation sheets, specifications, work authorizations and verbal data.

  3. Determine the grinding operations, sequences, methods and speed, feed & depth of cuts needed to accomplish a variety of grinding tasks. Layout and scribe reference and center lines, angles, and radii on material as guides in grinding.

  4. Position, align and clamp material to table, improvising as necessary with shims, fixtures, vises & chucks to maintain exacting tolerances. Set clearances, feeds, speeds and depth of cut.

  5. Select, mount, dress and true proper size, type and grade of wheel for various flats, contours, radii, and angles.

  6. Operate and adjust a variety of grinders to grind to size, angles & shapes a variety of tools, jigs, cutters and fixture components to exacting tolerances. Assemble and fit mating parts to insure acceptability.

  7. Check angles, contours, and radii on tools with comparator and check dimensions, finish clearances and set up with measuring instruments.

  8. Maintain tools, equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.

  9. Make proper time charge entries and record data as required.

  10. Perform other work of equal or lower classification as required.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidate must have previous experience in tool grinding and must be able to demonstrate quality execution of grinding drills, endmills, reamers, broaches, taps, blades, grooving tools etc. and miscellaneous tools including punch dies, arbors etc.. A working knowledge of cutter geometry and associated terms is required.
