Engineer Quality 2/3 - Receiving Inspection

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a talented Quality Engineer 2/3 (Receiving Inspection)to join our team in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.
Interface with program management, supply chain, contracts, engineering, and manufacturing functions to ensure that effective quality standards are in place and that quality products are delivered to customers. Establish positive working relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders. Provide guidance and support to projects on quality, risk management, and regulatory requirements. Implement the mission assurance quality management plan on assigned programs. Ensure that project and process control are compliant with requirements, objectives, and contracts.
Review and interpret contractual documents, regulations, and procedures to implement quality related requirements and to support audits. This review includes applicable specifications, standards, materials, tools, techniques, and methodologies. Accurately apply quality requirements as flow downs to shop orders, purchase requisitions, and/or subcontracts.
Develops, modifies, applies and maintains quality evaluation and control systems and protocols for processing materials into partially finished or finished materials product. Collaborates with engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure quality standards are in place. Devises and implements methods and procedures for inspecting, testing and evaluating the precision and accuracy of products and production equipment.
Develop, modify, apply, and maintain standards for quality processes, systems, and procedures, as needed. Conduct assessments/reviews on program plans, processes, and documentation. Witness testing, verification, and validation of product. Interface with program teams, auditors, and the quality representatives of both customers and suppliers. Serve as the primary liaison for customer source inspections and test witnessing events.
Perform source inspections of materials and parts to Purchase Order, Work Order, and Procedure Requirements and supplier audits. Audit internal processes for deficiency identification and correction. Identify root cause and ensure that corrective actions are implemented. Corrective measures must meet acceptable reliability standards and documentation must be compliant with requirements.
Disposition manufactured and procured material with material defect occurrences. Initiate and track to closure defects and corrective actions both internally and with suppliers. Process and disposition material review board actions. Represent quality on configuration/change control boards, h elp resolve quality issues related to Nonconformance, Corrective Action, and End Item Data Packages (EIDP's) .

Roles and Responsibilities
* Evaluates and reports on design, incoming material, production control, product evaluation and reliability, inventory control and/or research and development for product or process quality.
* Work with key suppliers to ensure they are performing well and their capacity and capability are adequate to deliver products on time
* Lead Supplier performance management by analyzing performance data, and identifying opportunities for improvement
* Preventing/Minimizing business impact from supplied material defects; supplier quality risk mitigation
* Proactive reduction and prevention of supplied material defect occurrences and verification of supplied material defect claims
* Perform Specification Compliance Reviews, First Article Inspections per (AS9102 or equivalent) and Source inspections.
* Initiate Corrective Action Plans and work with suppliers, manufacturing and engineering personnel to identify root cause and ensure robust corrective actions are implemented.
* Perform process and product audits along with capacity assessments to ensure the supplier's processes are robust and capable.

Basic Qualifications for a Level 2:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related STEM field
  • 2+ years of experience in a quality assurance, mission assurance, or related experience.
  • US Citizenship required

Basic Qualifications for a Level 3:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related STEM field
  • 5+ years of experience in a quality assurance, mission assurance, or related experience.
  • US Citizenship required
Basic Qualifications for a Level 2 & a Level 3:
* Have worked in an ISO 9001/AS9100 Quality Management System Environment
* Must be familiar with standard Visual and Mechanical Inspection techniques and tools.
* Confidence to enforce Quality Management System policies and procedures, while also working as part of a Team
* Ability to successfully interact with both internal and external customers on a variety of technical solutions.
* Ability to read Drawings and other Technical Data required.
* Ability to read contract and Purchase Order requirements and determine quality flow down to the manufacturing factory floor.
* Good communication skills required, both written and oral format and presentation skills..
* Understanding of continuous improvement principles.
* Proactive self-starter with demonstrated problem-solving skills and responsiveness.
* Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently

Required Technical Skills:
* MS Office computer skills required. (MS Access, Project experience a plus)
* Knowledge of SAP system.
* Mechanical Inspection hands on experience.
* Understanding of Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) as associated with MRB/FRB investigations.
* Experience developing, collecting, and analyzing metrics.
* Experience in root cause analysis and corrective action
* Able to analyze problems and strategize for better solutions

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Exposure to lean and six-sigma quality engineering methodologies
  • Previous experience working in an environment delivering products for a defense/military environment
  • Knowledge of statistical process control, data visualization, and/or measurement analysis methods.
  • First Article (AS9102) Documentation experience a plus
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T).
  • Previous experience in a DoD, DCMA and Missile Defense Agency environment or with a DoD provider of products and services.
  • Skilled at supporting internal and external audits for QMS.
