Engineer Mechanical Launcher Systems

Overview:

Using principles of mechanical engineering; develop, assemble, test, and document launcher certification & range GSE maintenance in support of the NASA Sounding Rocket Operations Contract (NSROC).

Job Description/Essential Functions:

Perform range of duties in outdoor and indoor conditions at the worldwide launch ranges used by the NASA Sounding Rockets Program.

Direct, coordinate, and participate in hands-on actions with technicians to include assembly, operation, problem resolution, testing, and repair of sounding rocket launchers, mechanical structures and systems; and create required processes, work instructions, and launcher certification/work reports.

Coordinate with NSROC Mechanical Engineering, Launch Vehicle Engineering, and Operations Management configure & certify Launchers/GSE to meet mission / vehicle requirements & schedule.

Create documentation for design and testing of launchers and GSE for presentation to peers and customers.

Serve as lead engineer for sounding rocket range development or maintenance & launcher installation projects, coordinating procurement and logistics of required fixtures, consumables, and other assets.

May be responsible for cost and schedule requirements.

Develop, and provide input for design and analysis of sounding rocket launcher structures, foundations, components, and support equipment applying principles and techniques of engineering.

Management of mechanical engineering assignments, and the development of new products and engineering specifications for applicable projects.

Work with SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation for design and analysis efforts.

Create and Design manufacturing Documentation with SolidWorks Drawings

Submit for and track of fabrication in NSROC Machine Shop.

Brief customers on technical development projects and negotiate design modification if needed.

Able to do manual labor and lift up to 20lbs.

Travel annually 14 weeks per year; some extended travel may be necessary; occasional years will require 16-24 weeks of travel. Must be able to obtain US passport.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
3D Mechanical CAD Software familiarization

Competent with hand, power, and electrical tools.

Basic Math/Trigonometry and Measurement skills

Preferred Qualifications:

BS Degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering, - Mechanical, Civil, Industrial or Structural

2+ years of related experience.

Competent with hand, power, and electrical diagnostic tools.

Working knowledge -Metal fabrication, Electrical power systems, Electromagnetic control systems, Mechanical transmission drive systems, trades -HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing & building construction

Basic Survey skills - familiarity w/ use of total station theodolite, inclinometer & other measuring instruments - survey grade GPS, laser tracker, transit

Working knowledge of SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation or similar design and analysis tools.
