The Structures Test team, part of the Systems Integration, Test and Evaluation division for Aerospace Systems is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer in El Segundo, CA to design, develop and implement testing methods and equipment in medium to large-scale structural tests for aircraft hardware qualification testing in flight deliverable and engineering environments.

This position requires very strong structural analysis and test equipment design and modification skills. The selected candidate must be able to travel occasionally to off-site test locations.

Typical daily duties include:

  • Provide senior test engineering support and oversight of structural qualification testing of component to large scale aircraft flight like mechanical components
  • Independently manage work packages with limited oversight
  • Design, specify, analyze, and procure, or produce test aids and support equipment needed for safe, efficient execution of mechanical tests
  • Provide coordination, oversight and leadership to less experienced engineering staff and support management in other administrative duties
  • Assess requirements, propose, design, develop, and implement (conduct) mechanical testing per established processes writing, releasing and updating test procedures as required
  • Lead and contribute to drawing and procedure development and release
  • Interface directly with management and customers to ensure expectations, testing and results meet all relevant requirements
  • Coordinate with Program Engineering, Measurements, Stress, QA and other engineering staff on test requirements, design and execution strategy
  • Plan and arrange labor, schedules, and equipment required for test and evaluation of standard and special devices, for both flight and engineering development hardware
  • Compile data and define changes required in test equipment, test procedures, manufacturing processes, or new test requirements
  • Completion and reporting of Earned Value
Basic Qualifications:
  • BS degree with a STEM focus and at least 9 years of related experience OR MS degree with a STEM focus and at least 7 years of related experience
  • Must be able to travel to off-site locations as required
  • Minimum 5 years practical hands-on CAD design experience
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a mechanical test engineering environment
  • Minimum 3 years experience working on large-scale structural testing
  • Minimum 5 years supporting proof load testing of ground support or flight hardware
  • Experience in test design reviews, test reviews, reports etc.
  • Experience with hydraulic power, actuators, servo valves and systems in load application
  • Active DoD Secret clearance required to start

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong structural analysis, test equipment design/modification skills
  • Experience using NXor CATIA CAD design systems
  • Experience working on large-scale structural testing
  • Experience with aircraft structural qualification testing
  • Familiarity with measurement systems, equipment andsensors
  • Familiarity with test procedure writing, release & management
  • Experience in application of mult-channel load control system
  • Familiarity using Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS)
  • Familiarity with FAR compliance
