Engineer Mechanical 3/4

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Test Design Engineering located in Linthicum, MD is seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our high-performance team supporting the design of test equipment for antennas, electronics chassis, circuit card assemblies, modules, and electronic subassemblies and components.

Typical roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design new or modify existing fixtures, rack mounted test equipment, test benches, cooling manifolds, integrated test assemblies, associated cabling, coolant hoses, and other mechanical or electromechanical systems in order to verify/satisfy customer requirements
  • Research and develop procedures, methods, and tools for testing hardware conformance to documented and derived system requirements
  • Automated system design requiring familiarity with controls engineering, automated control system design, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), motion control, controls components, computer vision, and Cognex cameras
  • Selection, sizing, and integration of off the shelf pneumatic actuators, motorized actuators, servo motors and other automation equipment
  • Robotic arm sizing and selection based on capabilities
  • Sensitivity to cost, schedule and quality as well as Northrop Grumman policies and procedures is imperative
  • Ability to successfully read and interpret schematics, block diagrams, sketches, oral and written instructions, manufacturer's specifications/operation manuals, and analyze hardware configurations
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a cross-functional team with other engineers, facility engineering, maintenance, and contractors
  • Support program meetings in developing root cause and corrective actions
  • Troubleshoot or support technicians in troubleshooting issues with test equipment or the hardware under test and provide suggestions for improvement and optimization
  • Verify equipment operation and performance of test equipment by making necessary calculations
This is a dual band position and candidates will be considered for a Band 3 or a Band 4 based on the qualifications below.
Basic Qualifications For a Band 3:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, Controls, or SystemsEngineering with 5 years ofexperience or 3 years of experience with a Master's Degree.
  • Relevant design experience along with 3D CAD modeling experience and experience with test equipment designed to test production hardware
Basic Qualifications for a Band 4:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, Controls, or SystemsEngineering with 9years of experience or 7 years of experience with a Master's Degree.
  • Relevant design experience along with 3D CAD modeling experience and experience with test equipment designed to test production hardware

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3D CADmodelingproficiency with NX 10
  • Experience working in a production environment
  • Automated system design experience
  • A basic knowledge of thermal and structural analysis and circuit card design
  • Experience designing custom precision parts and assemblies and proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Experience with mechanical and/or electromechanical systems used to test hardware for use in military applications
