Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems located in Redondo Beach, CA has an opening for a Mechanical Design Engineer 2. The selected candidate will support Spacecraft programs involving composite and metallic spacecraft structures. The candidate will perform mechanical design of spacecraft structures, deployables, and opto-mechanical design. He/she will work on conceptual design; preliminary layout & design; originate drawings; load path development; support preliminary sizing activities; develop proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing; develop knowledge of manufacturing techniques, processes & practices; generate CATIA/NX models, products & parts; perform tolerance analysis; participate in trade studies; design review presentations, support to fabrication; and interfacing with customer.

The candidate will work closely with stress, manufacturing, materials and processes and test to define structural load paths, develop CAD models and prepare engineering drawings to fabricate flight and structural test articles. The position requires knowledge in Composite and Metallic Mechanical Design.
Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering).
  • 2 years of experience designing composite and metallic primary and secondary aerospace structures
  • Working knowledge of CATIA V5 or NX 10.
  • Engineering drawings and related Bill-of-Materials.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerance applications (GD&T).
  • Knowledge of tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience in working in a spacecraft design team environment.
  • Current (in scope) SCI or DOD Secret clearance with an investigation within the last 5 years is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working on Special Access Programs is preferred
  • Participation in design cycles in spacecraft development programs is desirable.
  • Current (active in scope) DOD Secret and SCI clearances is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, be skilled in use of the Microsoft Office software suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
