Agency Release Train Engineer (RTE)

The primary role of The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is to support Agile Release Trains (ART) by steering them to success and navigating the complexity of delivering large scalable solutions.

The Release Train Engineer is a servant leader and coach for the Agile Release Train (ART). The RTE's focus is to deliver value by managing program level processes, execution and continuous improvement. Major responsibilities include the facilitation of the ART events and processes, communication with stakeholders, escalation of impediments and the management of program level risks.

They have a solid grasp of how to scale Lean and Agile practices and understand the unique opportunities and challenges associated with facilitating and continuously aligning a large program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Remove and manage impediments impacting development teams
  • Responsible for delivering technology solutions committed to by delivery teams for each PI and sprint
  • Coordinate with the support team to validate release, prepare for code deployment, package the product, deliver to production or market, and conduct PI and release retrospectives
  • Manage release train level issues, risks and dependencies
  • Escalate risks and issues needing management attention via refinement sessions or to the Program Team
  • Manage dependencies between delivery teams within release train and across release trains
  • Partners with Delivery Lead and Resource Managers to make staffing decisions
  • Ensure teams define capacity for PI Planning
  • Develop program release communication plan
  • Delivers release communication(s)
  • Schedules and facilitates program release planning activities
  • Accountable for ensuring System Demos are planned and executed
  • Accountable to ensure Inspect and Adapt activities are executed after each System Demo
  • Gather and report performance information (ex., Release burn down data)
  • Update and communicate ART Release Plans
  • Actively tracks and manage execution against program release goals
  • Continuous communication with product owners
  • Attends release train demonstrations
  • Supports communication of changing program priorities to teams
  • Assist teams with impediment removal
  • Manage program status communication to ensure transparency on program status
  • Compile and maintain project status reports and minutes of meetings
  • Communicate relevant information to all team members
  • Gain stakeholder acceptance of completed features

Qualifications:
  • Executive presence with high business IQ
  • Experience in facilitation/moderation of large-scale events and workshops
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 15 years of experience in software development
  • SAFe SASM, CSP, PSC or other advanced certification
  • PMP or PMI-ACP preferred
  • Successful track record with agile methodologies
  • 3-8 years of Project Management or Scrum Master experience
  • Has been accountable for delivery of projects up to $1 million
  • 2-3 years Program Experience
