Role Summary
The Retail Life Solution Engineer serves as an SME (subject matter expert) on various technical components connected with application workflows. This role will play an integral part in various development and enhancement efforts, while providing support for other efforts connected with the Retail Life portfolio.

Primary responsibilities include designing, developing, testing and implementing functionality and / or user interface changes for web-based applications. Typically, this role will work in a team environment with an architect, business analyst, quality analyst and project manager to modify existing applications to meet user requirements. Expectations are that this role will be:
  • familiar with integration patterns as well as connections to other applications and components within the ecosystem
  • required to troubleshoot application issues and bugs
  • able to research technical problems and suggests improvements for web applications
  • able to analyze and integrate new web productsechnologies with existing web applications to improve design and functionality

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand the full stack application (Infrastructure through UI), ensuring currency and adherence to NYL and industry standards
  • Fully understand the business workflow/functionality to ensure that technical solutions are meeting business requirements
  • Act as a subject matter expert in assigned functional domain(s), technologies and applications
  • Ensure documentation is continuously updated and represents an accurate level of detail
  • Perform impact analysis of changes requested / required within the ecosystem
  • Support initiatives through the entire solution delivery lifecycle from initial kickoff to production deployment, identifying potential technical risks and develop mitigation plans
  • Have the mindset for continuous improvements and identify opportunities for Automation within the tech stack
  • Provide recommendations to users on appropriate solutions, along with guidance concerning the business implications of application development projects
  • Facilitate and lead design review sessions and technical discussions
  • Work with Enterprise Architecture team to ensure standards and best practices are being adheredto
  • Develop high-level solution designs to satisfy requirements, identify patterns, constraints and risks
  • Appropriately estimate effort and duration for required changes
  • Oversee and/or execute the creation of lower-level designs and development efforts within both agile and waterfall frameworks
  • Work closely with test teams to ensure effective test coverage of required changes to supporttechnical implementation
  • Perform peer reviews and abides by separation of duties to ensure quality
  • Identify and execute opportunities to modernize technology, simplify logic, streamline processes, update architecture, etc. to enhance business performance and/or reduce risk
  • Assist in evaluating new technologies that may enable business success
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging trends and technologies and ensure that they are integrated into technical solutions whenever possible


Required Experience
  • .net/angular technologies
  • Proficiency inOracle developer tools/processes (including database procedures / packages/functions, SQL, PL/SQL), Oracle Forms, Unix/Linux operating systems (including shellscripts).
  • IT DevOps tools - GITHUB, Jenkins, HCL Launch
  • Able to identify applicable practices for New York Life and recommends new directions to management as appropriate
  • Possesses a broad understandingof current and emerging technologies, i.e., what is and what is not possible
  • Typical candidates will possess 5+ years of relevant experience but will also consider candidates with less years of experience and BA/BS Degree or equivalent


Desired Skills
  • Mainframe - TSO/ISPF, JCL, COBOL
  • IIB 10 workflow experience
  • Mainframe technologies from 3rd party vendors such as SyncSort, FileAid, eXpeditor, ISPW, etc.
  • Understands how various new technologies can meet business needs, taking into account the business risks and benefits of adoptinga new technology
  • Life Insurance experience
  • Possesses good understandingof a variety of development methods, including agile and waterfall, and their implications for a project

  • Ability to facilitate technical discussions with diverse and cross-functional groups

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to tailorcommunication to the target audience to achieve desired results
  • Able to transform business change into system level solutions. Understandsthe business impact of different solutions and can assess and communicatethe tradeoffs between business needs, technology requirements, costs, and risk
  • Effectively and proactively manage expectations
  • Detail oriented individual with strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to be self-directed, a good team player and the capacity for effective time management
  • Ability to clearly communicatetoboth technical and business teams
  • Solid in-depth understanding of Life Insurance or Financial Services industry
  • Collaborates with senior level users to identify innovative methods of leveraging technology to improve efficiency, quality, and speed to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Recommends investments in new tools or the adoption of new processes/methodologies
  • Performs risk assessment and develops a contingency plan with possible alternatives and a recommendation when unanticipated situations arise
