Job Summary:

The Data Solutions Manager's main objective is to participate with a team of database developers in building the underlying data platform supporting the reporting and information needs of the business unit, specifically focusing on ETL design, data integration, and BI modeling. Responsible for the analysis of moderate to complex business reporting and data requirements to be solved with automated data processing and reporting in support of business operations and decision-making. Apply and acquire specific knowledge of the business combined with authoritative level knowledge of database technology to business problem-solving. Utilize tools in the Microsoft data and reporting technology stack to implement data integration processes to enable both self-service and pre-built BI and operational reports (SQL Server, SSMS, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS). Strong SQL, data analysis, and database architecture design skills are used daily. Participate in a team engaged in the design, implementation, and maintenance of data processing and data reporting. Participate in meetings with users to define and evaluate data and reporting needs. Analyze detailed business requirements, including input and output requirements, reports, etc. Provide recommendation. Serve as technical lead and provide mentorship and direction to other technology staff members.

Major Responsibilities:

Become a Subject Matter Expert

  • Consult with business users and vendors for a need's assessment.
  • Develop a good understanding of the business unit's function and effectively communicate technical solutions in non-technical terms.
  • Lead and collaborate in the development of data interfaces between internal systems as well as external vendors to retrieve or transmit data for reporting purposes using ETL expertise and tools.
  • Lead and participate in the implementation of data processes and data design in alignment with industry-standard methodologies.
  • Acquire domain expertise in database-level data details that support the information requirements of the business.
  • Assist business consumers in understanding the semantics of the supporting data.

Monitor Work Progress and Quality

  • Consult with team members on technical considerations and assist in defining the technical solution.
  • Balance and mitigate issues from users regarding team member's work, as well as user expectations.

Collaborate with Team Members

  • Provide knowledge transfer on domain expertise related to technology and business processes within the department.
  • Analyze business partner's operations to understand their strengths and weaknesses to figure out opportunities to automate processes and functions.
  • Independently conducts studies of new or existing systems and recommends changes based on the results. Provides mentorship and training to business unit technical staff and other team members.

Leadership Skills

  • Demonstrable ability to collaborate and gain consensus among a varied constituency.
  • Ability to direct other technical staff to deliver results that meet the business need and conform to standards of quality according to IT standard methodologies.
  • Able to bridge the gap between business domain expertise and technical skills, translating SME knowledge to staff members via mentorship and knowledge transfer.
  • Provide consultation and direction to other technical staff on implementation approaches and make decisions on selecting the preferred approach among various options.

Experience and Education Requirements:
  • Demonstrated mastery of SQL.
  • Extensive experience with SQL Server, Oracle, Greenplum, Postgres, TSQL, PL/SQL.
  • Ability to develop stored procedures, ETL processes, and report queries.
  • Database design for both OLTP and OLAP implementations.
  • Working understanding of Kimball data warehousing design methodologies, including star/snowflake schema, fact table design, dimensional modeling, type 2 slowly changing dimensions, etc.
  • Hands-on experience in developing reports and data processes using the Microsoft Business Intelligence Stack (SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, SharePoint BI).
  • Experience in gathering and refining customer requirements.
  • 7+ years of specific IT knowledge and applicable systems, hardware and software.
  • Undergraduate degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
