General Summary

Michelman is looking for a Senior Manager, Packaging Innovation for the flexible packaging market.  The candidate will lead the research, the design and the development of new packaging materials integrating water-based coatings allowing brand owners to create packaging that is not only safe and user-friendly for consumers, practical for converting and packaging lines, but also sustainable and cost-effective. He works closely with Business Development, Marketing, Chemists, Coating Application Manager, and external stakeholders: Customer, Engineering, Regulatory groups, Contract Manufacturers, Packaging Machine Manufacturers, Raw Material Suppliers. The candidate is the expert in the organization for understanding:

  • How fragile a product is and how much protection it needs
  • Possible reactions to light, moisture or materials within the packaging
  • The conditions it may be in during transportation, like high or low temperatures
  • The way the product is packaged, filled-in and closed and how the packaging is then open
  • Legal requirements, like accurate labelling and safe packaging of hazardous materials
  • The environmental impact of packaging production, and its disposal once used

Primary Responsibilities

  • Determine protection needs in terms of barrier and closing technology of a packaging material in function of its expected content in terms of specifications (Research goods, packaging and closing mechanisms, substrates)
  • Lead benchmarking testing of existing packaging materials including (performances, costs)
  • Contribute to the design and development of new packaging material
  • Support the prototyping of new packaging material
  • Lead internal and external testing to validate the protective function of the newly designed packaging structure, its productivity on packaging lines and its consumer-friendliness
  • Ensure specifications are met
  • Support Marketing in preparing technical presentations and trainings
  • Liaise with internal laboratories to determine the adequate coating chemistries for a packaging structures
  • Liaise with external laboratories specialized in shelf life assessment and packaging machine manufacturers for developing state of the art packaging.
  • Stay at the top in domain of expertise

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Master in package engineering, packaging science, packaging technology, material science, chemistry or food science
  • Experience of 5 years in the flexible packaging industry
  • Proven experience in the design of new packaging structures considering aesthetics, food shelf life assessment and improvement, way to open and close the packaging

Preferred:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the food sciences and food production as it relates to packaging materials, equipment and applications
  • Specific experience with Food Packaging processes, equipment, and applications is desired
  • Must demonstrate basic knowledge of packaging systems, development processes, and material / equipment interactions
  • Technical understanding of adhesive laminating, extrusion laminating/coating, and flexo and gravure printing processes
  • Technical understanding of the properties of papers, foils, films adhesives, polymers and other materials commonly used in packaging
