Position Overview

The EHS Specialist is responsible for implementing environmental, health and safety programs to ensure compliance with established policies, legal requirements and EHS certifications. In addition, you will be responsible for conducting employee EHS training's, coordinating inspections of plants and labs for potential hazards. Interaction with plant and lab personnel to ensure a safe working environment, legal compliance and support to the business. Assist in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and maintain record keeping. You will be responsible for supporting the EHS Manager in coordinating the environmental regulatory programs and its permitting applications, along with being a backup to the site fire and security systems. You will play an essential role in raising safety awareness and building a sustainable safety culture

Primary Responsibilities

  • Walk the plant floor on a regular basis to establish EHS presence and provide support
  • Conduct hazard assessments (M&S) and assist in EHS inspections in plant and labs
  • Ability to evaluate PPE and ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE
  • Participate in detail incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), assign corrective actions and follow-up for completeness
  • Have knowledge of and the ability to enforce compliance of regulatory programs (OSHA, EPA, etc.)
  • Ability to write, implement, manage and train on EHS programs, policies and procedures
  • Assist in administering and maintaining compliance programs such as LOTO, Confined Space, Hazard Communication, Hot Work, Respiratory Protection, etc.
  • Assist in compliance reviews, general risk assessments, and other safety assessments
  • Maintain EHS logs and safety boards
  • Collect data and input in environmental metrics
  • Backup EHS Mgr. on the fire suppression and Brivo security system
  • Provide assistance and advice on EHS issues to make recommendations to facility management
  • Encourage safe work practices, corrects obvious hazards immediately or reports them to the proper personnel
  • Ability to work with employees and achieve cultural change in the face of potential resistance
  • Maintain positive and proactive relations with managers and employees, as well as regulatory agencies
  • Review and approve SDSs for new chemicals
  • Safety oversite for FMB review
  • Approve new contractors based on evaluation of safety performance questionnaire
  • Provide contractor safety orientation meeting and conduct performance evaluation
  • Coordinate activities of EHS vendors (i.e. Cintas, Cincinnati Time)
  • Assist with NHO safety training
  • Participate on ergo teams, perform ergo assessments and provide feedback for corrective actions
  • Maintain AFM Red Tag program for fire suppression impairment
  • Assist with safety committee to address issues/concerns in plant/lab
  • Coordinate and track medical surveillance for all employees who wear a respirator
  • Assist with coordination and training of Emergency Response Team members
  • Respond to emergency situations, act as Incident Coordinator to control the situation and communicate to management as necessary
  • Provide safety assessments for new R&D projects
  • Attend monthly safety council meetings
  • Oversee hazardous waste storage area to ensure regulatory agency compliance (i.e. labeling containment, proper disposal, documentation, etc. and conduct weekly inspection of hazardous waste storage area and document
  • Maintain and perform required inspections for SPCC and SWPPP program
  • Manage wastewater permit and submit documentation as needed
  • Collect data and input in environmental metrics
  • Work with Engineering for environmental improvement projects

Critical Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Specialized in area of safety program development, training, implementation and management
  • Proficient knowledge and use of standard Windows programs (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • EHS report preparation (OSHA logs, Tier 2, Form R and/or EHS permits)
  • Excellent written and oral communication

Education and Experience

  • A four year degree preferred or EHS Certifications with 3-5 years of experience in EHS field in a chemical or process manufacturing environment
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations
