Senior Director of Formulation


The Senior Director of Formulation leads the formulation and fragrance functions at method. This highly strategic role is responsible for leading a team of 8 talented scientists, formulators and fragrance experts and ensures that their work is complimentary and aligned to business priorities. This is a player/coach role that leads by working directly with the business teams, suppliers and vendors, with a little lab work thrown in. They must leverage the Global Platform Technology team in the integration of innovative new technologies to extend method’s lead in the creation of disruptive products. It is essential for this person to support the Quality and Product Services/ Scale Up teams at the method factory in Chicago (the Southside Soap Box) in all aspects of their work.


Technical and Innovation Leadership

  • Identify and implement ingredient technologies and formulation strategies to deliver unique and differentiated products across the method product portfolio that align to business strategies
  • Work cross functionally with the heads of fragrance and packaging to ensure a comprehensive and aligned New Product Development approach
  • Support the product insight and benchmarking program in conjunction with the Brand and Sales functions
  • Continually improve the environmental and sustainability positioning of the method formulation technologies
  • Help identify and implement cost savings and product improvements in line with the relentless pursuit of our product strategy
  • Work with Quality Control and Production Services on project startups; actively manage resources and workloads to ensure flawless execution

People Leadership
  • Design and develop a department infrastructure to ensure ability to scale to meet method’s future requirements; troubleshoot and pioneer a best in class relationship with Global platforms and Production Services
  • Develop the Formulation team to succeed in a “design and deliver” environment
  • Develop robust development plans including unique growth experiences for all team members and ensure their implementation
  • Be an active promoter and participant of method’s unique culture as it relates to design thinking, collaboration and transparency

  • Senior chemist/formulator/scientist with at least 12 years of experience in new product development, formulation and team leadership
  • Experience with sustainability and innovation as well as people development
  • Extensive background in developing environmentally sensitive home cleaning, personal care and laundry products
  • Experienced in identifying emerging chemical and raw material technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally with teams to build a successful model for development of new platforms and/or categories
  • Proven commercialization experience

  • Creative thinker able to link formulation ideas to business and strategic goals
  • Deep knowledge of competitive formulations and an eye for new technologies
  • Exceptional communicator and people leader with the ability to demystify technical issues for a non technical audience
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills; proven ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously
