Vice President, Advanced UX Design

Advanced User Interaction & Experience Design is crucial for the success of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The digital displays/ interfaces in the vehicles are getting larger, technology and innovation is evolving with light speed, the customer expectations – especially by younger new customer groups like digital natives – are rising very quickly with the huge success of consumer electronics, smartphones and tablets. The use of very simple and easy to use devices with a great user experience, especially driven by consumer electronics has revolutionized the industry and we must become a leader in the area.

Scope and Impact

  • Design, oversee and lead all of the research and development activities for the Advanced User Experience Design
  • Serves as the chief decision maker for the Advanced User Experience Design group and strategically build out the organization

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Guide and oversee the creation of attractive, easy to use and advanced user interface designs with a focus on Head Unit applications and services, smartphone applications, cloud-based applications in-vehicle and related web applications, and instrument clusters, as well as overall vehicle interior prototypes in the Advanced User Experience Studio
  • Provide technical direction and recommend solutions to various departments within the division
  • Requires the supervision of full-time employees and direction of external vendors. Responsibilities include adhering to the administration of company policies and procedures (in collaboration with Human Resources) by interviewing, recommending hiring, training requirements, planning and assigning tasks and responsibilities, evaluating team/individual performance, creating team/individual plans for technical and professional skills development, recommending rewards and disciplinary actions
  • Support the creative design teams to enable the development of creative, compelling and appropriate design solutions for every project
  • Manage multiple phases of concurrent projects in a fast paced environment including brainstorming, prototyping, creating specifications and product development support
  • Develop and maintain a clear and cohesive design vision and create standards and a style guide for user interface development
  • Foster relationships with other teams within MBRDNA and affiliate organizations
  • Establishes budgets, short and long term objectives and criteria for monitoring progress and measuring success

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with user experience design and management of groups in user experience design, prototyping, and testing with extensive hands-on experience in complex but easy-to use/user-friendly UI design
  • Solid knowledge of prototyping tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, Flash, (InDesign and Visio). Experience with Mac Computers, applications and user interface are a plus
  • Excellent leadership and analytical skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in cross functional design and development teams
  • Comprehensive knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique and efficiency and process methods
  • Ability to manage project life cycles, deliverables, and reporting tools
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills
  • German language skills are a plus
  • Strict adherence to the budget guidelines and ability to react quickly to budget adjustments
  • Strategic and creative mind, with a passion for excellence

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelors degree in User Experience Design, User Interaction Design, User Interface Design, Industrial Design, Graphics Design, or other related fields. Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in managing User Experience, User Interaction/Interface Design projects
  • Minimum 5 years of people management experience and proven success at creating, building up, and leading multiple teams.
  • Experience working in automotive industry is a plus
  • Proven ability to lead design organizations in a multicultural international environment
