InSHAPE Health Educator

Salary Range: $18.00/hr. – $20.00/hr. ($37,440/yr. – $41,600/yr.)

Position Summary:

The most disadvantaged group in the U.S. in terms of life expectancy are people with serious mental illnesses. Due to a host of associated health problems—including high rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and breathing disorders—Americans with a serious mental illness have a life expectancy 15 to 30 years less than the rest of the population. In addressing this health disparity, the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) seeks to hire a full-time Health Educator who is also a certified personal trainer or will become certified within 90 days of hire, who will pair up with individuals who receive mental health services at MHCD and are a participant in the InSHAPE program. InSHAPE, (Individualized Self Health Action Plan for Empowerment) an evidenced-based practiced that is designed to improve fitness and weight loss among overweight persons with serious mental illness. The Health Educator will meet with up to 30 people individually on a weekly basis throughout the year by joining them at local fitness centers (free passes to Denver Parks and Recreation Centers) to coach each person in personal fitness and nutrition.

Essential Job Functions: The Health Educator will provide weekly individual personal fitness/exercise coaching in a local community fitness setting. The Health Educator will also provide individual and group nutrition education and assist in the development of nutrition plans to InSHAPE program participants. The Health Educator will assist participants in weekly goal setting, tracking individual progress and program outcomes, and helping participants stay motivated. Data will be collect using an Ipad provided by MHCD. In addition, the Health Educator will assist in the promotion of the InSHAPE program and enroll participants. This person will also meet weekly with InSHAPE Supervisor for clinical supervision and program management, help plan and facilitate tri-annual celebrations, and participate in treatment team meetings

Education: Bachelor’s in health education, health promotion, health psychology or other health and wellness field. A certified personal trainer with experience and/or interest in working with diverse populations; or someone with human services experience who will obtain a personal trainer certification through one of the following nationally recognized organizations: AAFA, NASM, ACE , or ACSM.

Other Qualifications/Skill/Competencies: The Health Educator should possess a positive, non-judgmental, strengths based attitude. This person should be enthusiastic about getting people motivated and keeping motivation in order to obtain their health goals. Strong interpersonal/relationship building skill and the ability to manage own schedule with clients and group commitment, ability to manage a balance of direct care and documentation responsibilities are desired. Experience and or training in motivational interviewing and motivational strategy building is preferred.
