In compliance with applicable New York and New Jersey State regulatory authorities, COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine) is mandatory for all MSK employees, contingent workers, and volunteers. Exceptions are permitted for those employees who request and receive an approved medical or fully remote exemption.

*Staff working at a MSK New Jersey location must be up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, which includes having completed the primary COVID-19 vaccination series and booster once eligible as mandated by New Jersey State. All New Jersey staff not yet eligible for a booster must receive a booster within 3 weeks of becoming eligible as a condition of continued employment at MSK.
Note: Individuals are eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster five months after receiving the second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two months after the J&J vaccine.
Job Description
The Cytogenetics Laboratory, located at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, is seeking a Cytogenetic Technologist, to perform karyotype and FISH procedures as well as innovative molecular technologies to discover novel genetic and clinically useful chromosome and molecular biomarkers. The Cytogenetic Technologist will be part of the team performing conventional cytogenetics, FISH, and several microarray testing protocols on various tumor sample types. The position requires wet-bench lab experience and understanding of molecular cytogenetics.
You will:
- Under general supervision, carry out cytogenetic analysis of specimens received by the laboratory.
- Perform culture initiation, harvesting and chromosome analysis with minimal direction.
- Identify routine cytogenetic abnormalities.
- Complete diagnostic reports while maintaining quality of work within established time frames.
- Perform laboratory bench work according to established and approved Standard Operating Procedures.
- Review all test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential problems.
- Follow unidirectional flow of specimen handling to avoid contamination.
- Help maintain commonly used equipment. Resolve minor equipment problems.
- Operate equipment carefully and according to procedures.
- Perform vital equipment checks, performance testing, preventive maintenance, and quality control on equipment per laboratory guidelines, as assigned.
- Assure equipment and instruments meet performance standards.
- Maintain compliance with clinical genetic testing regulatory agencies and proficiency programs (CAP, CLIA, NYS Department of Health).
- Verify requisitions and labels; records patient information.
You need:
- BS in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related life sciences field with experience working in a Cytogenetics laboratory, with 1 year of chromosomal microarray (SNP-Array and/or aCGH) preferred.
- NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License Required
