Job Summary

Responsible for patient care and related activities, program planning, assigned team and teaching activities relative to recognize knowledge, experience and expertise. Provides team administrative direction in the absence of the Clinical Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications


Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy.

Bachelor's, Certificate or basic level Master's degree in Occupational Therapy.


3 years clinical experience in a rehabilitation or acute care setting.

Previous experience in teaching occupational therapy treatment principals and application to occupational therapy students and/or staff.


DC licensure or eligibility

Expertise in clinical area program as demonstrated by:

Independence in the use of varied evaluation and treatment approaches

Advances training in area of clinical expertice through attendance at workshops and self learning.

Familarity with up to date technology and treatment techniques related to area of specialty.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Facilitates coordination and takes leadership role in rounds, patient conferences and family meeting as appropriate.

Role models and guides team in maximizing use of therapy services and alternative service delivery methods in response to changes in the health care delivery system.

Responsible for daily maintenance of the therapy areas and equipment.

Accesses information for patient care.

Accurately and timely documentation of patient care activities painting a clear picture of the patient's course of care.

Writes legible progress notes or other documentation which accurately reflect treatments received.

Accurately reports type of services provided to each patient daily on billing sheets and submits them in a timely manner.

Participates in department/service/team specific decision making and problem solving that impacts patient care.

Actively participates in general staff and team meetings.

Identifies opportunities for process improvement that impacts patient care.

Identifies opportunities to expand supplies and equipment to enhance patient treatment options.

Staff Development

Serves as a resource person in areaas of clinical expertise and facilitates integration of patient treatment plans.

Works in active partnership with staff on projects/presentations for development of staff clinical and professional skills.

Mentors the development of staff on their team to include completion of clinical competencies.

Provides supervision to assigned staff on their team and contributes feedback for performance appraisals.

Provides input in regards to team members performance appraisals as appropriate.

Recognizes team/service issues and discusses them with supervisor on a timely basis to enhance daily operations.

Understands roles of and works cooperatively with team, service and other diciplines to develop networks and peer relationships.

Functions as role model for the practice of Occupational Therapy through demonstration of professional conduct and ethical standards of practice.


Teaches staff, students and other professionals theoretical concepts and specific thrapeutic techniques.

Provides inservice and continuing education programs for team, service and program.

Takes initiative for pursuing and directing continuing education for professional growth and competency in area of interest.

Provides community related education programs and interprets current Occupational Therapy practice to others.

Assists with orientation of new staff.

Participates in community education and professional activities to include writing abstacts or presenting at professional conference/workshops.

Acts as a clinical instructor to assigned students..

Program Development

Proposes methods for team/service program development based on objective data.

Conducts special projects and assists with research studies related to the team or area of specialty.

Actively participates and problem solves on service/hospital task forces and committees.

Develops professional network with peers in regional/national facilities to facilitate exchange of professional ideas including treatment protocols.

Develops and maintains professional relationships within MedStar system.

Quality Improvement/Program Evaluation

Participates in peer review, quality improvement and program evaluation.

Involves team members in the quality improvement process.


Manages own time to meet productivity expectations and service demands and assists clinical supervisor with monitoring staaff on team to assure adherence to qualtiy improvement standards and bugetary guidelines.

Attends appropriate service/hospital meetings.

Completes assigned administrative duties to include data collection for statistics and reports.

Assures compliance of hospital and service policies and procedures.

Represents staff concerns objectively to Clinical Supervisor and works cooperatively toward issue resolution.
