Associate Director of Advocacy

Position Description:
The Associate Director of Advocacy will report to the Director of Advocacy. This individual will have experience with national level policy and will lead MDA’s policy analysis and response efforts with the feedback of the Director of Advocacy, the MDA research department, and other colleagues. The Associate Director will chiefly focus on policy analysis but may also be required to represent MDA in multiple functions including, but not limited to, coalition efforts, meetings with policy makers, and other engagements to promote MDA’s work to advance innovations in science and innovations in care for the neuromuscular community.

- Conduct comprehensive research and policy analysis of proposed federal regulations and guidelines, and write official comment with input from colleagues in MDA’s Advocacy and Research departments.
- Monitor and report on status of relevant national policy developments, including legislation, regulations, and policy proposals.
- Provide detailed analysis on the impact of proposed federal legislation and regulations on the neuromuscular community.
- Monitor non-governmental evaluations of treatment efficacy and valuation and write official comment on behalf of MDA.
- Monitor and evaluate select proposed state policy proposals for their impact on the neuromuscular community.
- Track, evaluate and prepare regular reports around policy and advocacy efforts in which MDA is engaged or monitoring to MDA staff and coalition partners as required.
- Provide regular updates on proposed policy to MDA staff and its coalition partners as required.
- Represent MDA at meetings, symposia, Congressional hearings, and other events as requested.
- Work closely with MDA’s research, communications, and other departments on an ongoing basis.
- Participate in speaking engagements and on panel opportunities as requested.
- Prepare correspondence to Congressional offices, executive agencies, advocates, and others.
- Participate in MDA training, educational activities, and events.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred, with a minimum of 6 years of public policy, advocacy, or relevant experience at the national level.
- Experience working on newborn screening policy, disability policy, healthcare research policy, and/or healthcare access policy preferred.
- Capitol Hill or federal agency experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate in an accessible format.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple organizations and lead/meaningfully influence large coalition efforts.
- Ability to manage multiple high-level tasks and initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, and ability to use (or learn) advocacy software platforms and patient management platforms.
- Working knowledge of how to use social media platforms.
- Ability to analyze complex policy scenarios and understand the implications for the neuromuscular disease community.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate in a consistent, proactive and inclusive manner.
