Junior Data Scientist - Geospatial Analytics


  • Undergraduate degree from a respected institution and advanced degree in a related quantitative field such as Economics, GIS, Computer Science, Finance, Business, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, etc.)
  • 0 – 3 years work experience; relevant experience in an operations research or analytics setting (public or private sector) is a plus
  • Strong interest in developing a knowledge base in geospatial analytics and solving location-based problems
  • Solid understanding of economic, financial, and general business concepts and terminology
  • Familiarity of analytical packages such as R, Python, SQL, etc., and approaches (regression, decision trees, clustering, neural networks, etc.)
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and/or geospatial approaches (spatial analysis, network analysis, geographic visualization, etc.) is preferred, but not required
  • Ease communicating technical content in an understable way
  • Intellectual curiosity, along with excellent problem-solving and quantitative skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and with people at all levels in an organization
  • Skills to communicate complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing in English and Mandarin

Who You'll Work With

You will work with the Global Geospatial Analytics team based in Shanghai while also collaborating with our teams in the United States, Costa Rica and Brazil.

Geospatial Analytics is a cutting-edge capability that supports consulting teams on a wide range of business issues that are geographic in nature and often cut across several industries and functions. The team has distinct capabilities that leverage spatial analytics such as spatial statistics, optimization, visualization and modeling.

You will interact daily with your colleagues from other locations as well as travel on occasion to serve clients internationally. In addition, you will benefit from all training opportunities that we have developed for our analytics colleagues as well as those designed specifically for knowledge professionals.

There is flexibility to hire at either the Junior Research Analyst or Research Analyst level depending on the qualifications of the individual.

What You'll Do

You will be responsible for conducting specialized and distinctive analytics using large and complex data sets to solve client problems.

This may include analyzing the drivers of performance to inform customer relationship management, developing an optimal distribution network configuration model for a global supply chain, or geographically optimizing a field sales force, working in a fast-paced team environment.

Your work will be project-oriented. You will often be responsible for the entire analytical process — from outlining the best solution to implementing results. You will interpret results for colleagues, consultants, and clients, and you will often create plans for transferring capabilities to the client. You will perform these roles through a mix of remote and on-site work.

Working on projects and exchanging experiences with your colleagues means you will face new intellectual challenges on a daily basis, while continuously building your methodological knowledge and skills. You are expected to develop and contribute to such knowledge base on analytic methods and techniques, as well as relevant data and information sources used in geospatial analytics.
