IT Category Expert - Procurement
- 3-5 years of experience as a purchasing manager overseeing large IT contract procurement across all categories (i.e. Software, Hardware/Infrastructure, Telecom, IT labor, Managed Services)
- 2-3 years of experience as a purchasing lead for a specific IT category (e.g., networking)
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred
- Experience negotiating large-scale contracts from inception/requirement through RFP, bid appraisals, negotiations and implementation
- Expert capabilities combined with strategic thinking
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively engage and partner with consultants
- Procurement relationship management skills
- Deep expertise in one particular IT Purchasing category
- Knowledge of IT trends and new/emerging technologies
- Willing and able to travel to multiple client sites from 2-4 days per week
Who You'll Work With
You'll join one of our North American offices as part of our Operations Practice and Digital McKinsey, focused on IT procurement. You'll work closely with client-deployed teams to ensure maximum client impact, develop the most up to date and relevant cross-functional IT material, and support the development of a new partnership between McKinsey's Operations practice and Digital McKinsey. You will report to the Global Partner Conveners of the Procurement service line and Digital McKinsey collaborative leaders.

What You'll Do
You'll focus on client service team and client support, knowledge development and management, and overall support of the practice.
Working with client teams, you'll use your expertise to assist leadership teams in both the preparation of and presenting of letters of proposal that include the specific IT Procurement expertise as a selling point. You'll split your time between 2-3 clients undertaking IT Procurement transformations. This includes reviewing IT spend and supply market analysis, providing inputs on suppliers and sourcing strategy, and analyzing opportunities to reduce cost or increase value benchmarks, purchasing processes and metrics. You'll also prepare and analyze RFPs with clients (including bid review), you'll prepare clients for negotiations, including relevant analysis, preparation of talking points, and client coaching, and you'll plan implementation to ensure category wave remains successful. You may also provide off-site assistance to client service teams, typically in the form of problem solving sessions to review data, agree on next steps, and provide guidance.
In regards to knowledge development and management, you will have the opportunity to drive the development and execution of knowledge in IT Procurement, including best in class material for client proposals, detailed savings levers for IT Procurement categories, you'll capture relevant client information to build cases and reference material, and you'll develop ongoing research on latest IT Procurement/Sourcing trends and news. You'll be able to extend your expertise to include internal and external knowledge and perform market assessment to identify new trends in IT Procurement across digital, traditional and agency categories. Additionally, you will maintain awareness of competitor offerings and competitive advantage and identify gaps in current McKinsey IT Procurement offering and propose ways to build new capabilities.
More broadly, you'll support the practice by helping to develop internal training programs where your expertise and experience is an appropriate learning tool, and you'll assist with practice management (e.g., recruitment and retention initiatives), practice meeting preparation, and the development of a partnership with Digital McKinsey.
