Overview

Mastercard is searching for an attorney with transactional and product development experience (preferably in the payments space) to join our Law Department. This exciting position may be based in our Miami Latin America & Caribbean (LAC) region headquarters, or in another LAC regional office, and will support our global Products & Innovation product team in the development and distribution of payment products with a focus on Consumer Products (Credit, Debit & Prepaid), Processing & ACH/real-time payment products. This position reports to the General Counsel, LAC (located in Miami) and the Assistant General Counsel, Consumer Products & Processing (located in the global headquarters in Purchase, NY).

As a legal team, we provide best-in-class legal counsel in connection with our products & solutions as they are identified, developed, tested and brought to market with both existing and new customers. We are business relationship managers - actively participating in crafting the strategic direction of payments through cross functional business and subject matter expert teams. We demonstrate personal accountability to help lead the business forward through hands-on engagement, partnership and strategic value creation.

The ideal candidate is a curious, self-motivated, technology- and payments-minded attorney with transactional experience who can manage day-to-day legal support for dynamic technologists, product developers, product managers and account teams. The candidate must demonstrate sound business and legal judgment, thrive in a fast-paced environment, with a diverse workload, and have a proven track record of providing pragmatic and proactive legal advice. The candidate must be able to engage at both the tactical and strategic level to support his or her internal clients.

About the Role
The Senior Counsel, P&I role requires strong commercial acumen and experience in supporting new product development in the financial services space. The role will support the development and distribution of Payment Product offerings, including drafting and negotiating contracts, and legal risk management related to our Core Product & Processing product teams tasked with ensuring the LAC product and services development & product/services distribution legal requirements and priorities are identified and supported, on a timely and proactive basis, through direct support and through coordination and collaboration with LAC region counsel, the legal leads for each of the product verticals, and other colleagues.

The key responsibilities for the role include:
•Partnering with product, sales, franchise, marketing, and other teams to develop and launch innovative products and solutions that differentiate Mastercard and meet our customers' rapidly changing needs.
•Structuring and negotiating a wide range of contracts (including complex technology agreements, customer and vendor agreements) to drive issuer, merchant acceptance and consumer adoption of our solutions across the region.
•Collaborating with in-house and external specialists (including regulatory, compliance, data protection, and intellectual property counsel) to identify relevant issues and help the business effectively navigate legal risks, including monitoring and evaluation of applicable laws and government regulations affecting our operation and solutions.
•Partner with colleagues to develop and present policy and regulatory positions related to Mastercard's Core Products & Processing services.
•Assist with the creation of training materials, product guides, franchise rules, and development activities to advance the business objectives in a compliant manner.
•Providing support to product and regional sales teams to support product sales initiatives.
•Advising business on a wide range of commercial and contractual matters including legal and business risk assessment and analysis on diverse matters from new product constructs to commercial agreements.
•Taking responsibility for special projects while continuing to handle a steady stream of day-to-day matters.
•Ensuring compliance with Mastercard's policies and procedures and providing applicable training to the business.
•Managing external counsel within agreed policy and budget.

All About You
•Qualified lawyer with a solid academic and training background.
•Extensive legal experience, preferably including in-house work experience.
•Familiarity with laws and regulations in the banking and payments space will be considered favorably.
•Ability to grasp complex new business concepts and develop and implement creative approaches to problems while identifying and balancing risks with results.
•Strong business acumen, and a keen interest in technology.
•Strong drafting and negotiating skills across a range of complex commercial contracts and the ability to analyze and identify core legal issues.
•Exposure to a broad range of transactional, commercial and technology law issues.
•Strong working knowledge of data privacy and intellectual property issues.
•Team player and great attitude.
•Self-starter and ability to work independently.
•Experience working on global agreements, across multiple jurisdictions and time zones.
•Solutions-orientated and able to work flexibly, under pressure, and with tight deadlines.
•Lively interest in the business of Mastercard and an enjoyment of working in a fast-paced environment.
