POSITION SUMMARY

Leads, develops and supervises employees within the Plan Analyst Department. Leads the department development of industry leading tools and templates to support changes in the benefits industry and client needs. Drives innovation and forward thinking in the department. Works collaboratively with other departments, company leadership and other MMA offices to continue to drive profitable growth. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees, appraising performance, rewarding, disciplining employees, resolving problems and enhancing teamwork within and between Account Teams. Ensure performance management, personal development and training requirements are identified and appropriate action is taken. Partners with Account Directors in the development of annual employee reviews.

In addition to department leadership responsibilities, manages a small, reduced book of business.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Senior Plan Analyst Responsibilities:

Performs duties with limited direction from the Account Director including constructing detailed client/prospect reports while demonstrating a high level of technical skill. Possesses advanced knowledge and technical expertise of industry trends and changes to the health care/employee benefits delivery system. Actively communicates and negotiates with carriers to create an ideal benefit plan for clients. Communicates effectively internally and externally with limited direction from the Account Director on matters related to work product, work-in-progress, market information and other relevant underwriting concerns. Performs job functions independently, proactively and efficiently with a very high level of proficiency and sense of urgency.

Team Management: Manages the activities in the Plan Analyst department.

Ensures department tools and templates are kept current with industry changes and used efficiently and consistently throughout the department. Evaluates MMA tools for use/efficiency gains and determines which will be adapted locally. Monitors and encourages appropriate use of templates, maintaining client filing standards and other policies and procedures of the Plan Analyst department. Partners with Human Resources in recruitment efforts and is responsible for hiring, progressive counseling and/or terminations of team members. Partners with Account Management team, Finance, Marketing and other departments for efficiency. Partners with other MMA offices regional and nationally, striving for efficient practices and sharing of information. Includes regular calls, offsite meetings and workgroups. Evaluates and recommends existing Plan Analysts "readiness" for promotion to Senior Plan Analyst.Looks for development opportunities for high potential Plan Analysts. Oversees the development of department on-boarding for new employees. Oversees the development of the annual Plan Analyst department training plan and development of individual training as necessary. Responsible for overseeing and developing six month and annual employee performance reviews in partnership with the assigned Assistant Manager/Account Director.Ensures that reviews are written in a consistent manner, use of tools/templates is evaluated and that final reviews are delivered on time. Also drafts and delivers reviews for key Analyst roles. Motivates and encourages staff.Listens to the input of others. Communicates and cascades information to employees in a timely manner. Addresses and resolves employee relations issues.Demonstrates the ability to handle difficult employee issues and provide constructive feedback when necessary. Sets clear goals and objectives and holds staff accountable.Provides coaching to improve performance and holds regular development discussions with staff as needed.Recognizes staff for their contributions. Defines the roles and responsibilities of the Assistant Plan Analyst Manager(s), making adjustments over time as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years' experiencein the healthcare benefits industry working for a group insurance carrier, broker or general agency.
  • Previous leadership, supervisory and/or management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in building department tools/templates and holding staff accountable for continued use.
  • Solid conceptual and analytical thinking. A successful candidate will have a strong math aptitude.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure (deadlines & juggling many projects).
  • Ability to work well with people, in a team environment, and to communicate effectively at all levels is required. Ability to "see the big picture" and collaborate effectively with other members of the leadership team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a proven ability to establish relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to function in a fast paced environment, under short time constraints, and within established deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications to include Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
