Claims Advocate

The Claims Advocate at Marsh will provide proactive coverage and claims strategy advice to clients on practice-specific or line of business claims within the Casualty practice. Monitor and drive claims process to ensure progress from notification through to closure. Develop and maintain strategic market relationships. Liaise with insurers and their advisors on most queries and policy coverage discussions. Chair meetings with the client, insurers and their advisors. Drive insurer service and relationship discussions and provide policy wording feedback. Lead claims discussion in renewal meetings and RFPs. Participate in the development of strategic business plans for a line of business. May handle out of country claims, interacting with other markets/market practices. Provides client training. Responsible for marketing advocacy services both internally and externally to generate business revenue. Close interaction with senior managers, individual CEs, Claims Advocacy colleagues and Claims Operations colleagues.


  • Identify appropriate policies and/or coverages and analyze/consider notification against same - complex
  • Discussion with clients, on claim calculation, coverage or other relatable areas of concerns clients' may have
  • Follow up with Experts, discuss claim and/or arrange meetings as required
  • Necessary attendance, input and guidance at client meetings
  • Examination and validation of expert reports.
  • Guidance to clients and challenge to experts as applicable
  • Prepare arguments for coverage & negotiations with Insurers and/or experts regarding to reports/coverage
  • Draft bespoke letters or correspondence for the client and/or review/comment on letters drafted by clients
  • Detailed client claim review meetings, claims reviews, claim strategy discussions
  • Disputed claims handling & specific advocacy for client on issues
  • Attendance at regular scheduled formal claims review meetings between the client and insurers and/or appointed claims handlers/adjusters
  • Multinational client co-ordination and service delivery
  • Legacy, historic or long term claims exposure review and identification of appropriate client policies
  • Colleague technical training and ongoing technical support & guidance
  • Liaison with placement and/or internal colleagues on specific client issues
  • Analyze loss statistics, identify trends, claims cost reduction opportunities, prepare report & recommendations
  • Interpretation of claims data to facilitate action plans to manage client total cost of risk
  • Creation of claims literature and thought leadership material
  • Proactively handle tasks in line with specific client requirements, departmental procedures and scope of role / limits of authority

Operations & Strategic Management
  • Challenge existing practices and develop Innovative solutions. Seek input & feedback, listen & evaluate, exhibit flexibility determining solutions
  • Identify & facilitate implementation of improvements to practices or processes which improve the client value proposition and sales opportunity
  • Lead, manage and/or contribute to complex projects of significant scope and impact
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships, utilizing effective communication, with colleagues, clients and other external parties
  • Build, maintain & demonstrate comprehensive knowledge & understanding of the Marsh organization, strategies & client drivers/expectations
  • Monitor external environments for trends and best practices and implement appropriate action plans
  • Within limits of authority, use judgement and take personal responsibility for areas off financial impact
  • Lead and/or contribute to internal and external meetings and projects as required
  • Identify emerging risks, assess and capture within the departmental risk register and, escalate to senior management where appropriate
  • Attendance/participation in renewal strategy meetings (internal & external) and provision of claims feedback to assist in market placement and/or renewal
  • Insurer relationship management
  • Internal E&O mitigation and investigation
  • Liaison and input to Marsh senior client relationship, product or divisional leadership
  • Opinion on policy wordings, input into policy language and discussions on coverage application (internal only)
  • Ensure all local (or international) protocols or regulations are understood and adhered to Claims fee pricing
  • Support for RFP's, including provision of claims response
  • Engagement in selling claims services to clients and articulating the value proposition
  • Analyze CSA activity and assist CE in appropriate pricing of services
  • Creation of claims procedures or manuals, liaison with clients, carriers and experts as necessary
  • Set up of Claim Handling procedures for International programs and liaison with servicing or producing offices
  • Negotiate reporting procedures and/or Service Level Agreements with Insurers/suppliers on behalf of Clients
  • Provide bespoke claims training and development resource to address client requirements
  • Strategic review of client in house operation and implementation of appropriate system of loss reporting
  • Advice & Guidance on the claims process with reference to the policy language
  • Ensure adherence to internal & client service standards, key performance indicators & business objectives, through effective management techniques
  • Proactively handle tasks in line with specific client requirements, departmental procedures and scope of role / limits of authority
  • Monitor service deliverables ensuring tasks completed within criteria agreed in client service agreements or internal guidelines
  • Instigate and oversee strategies to resolve business issues and achieve the best possible outcome for clients or Marsh

  • College or university degree in a relevant field
  • Casualty Claims experience required
  • At least 5 years of previous insurance or financial services experience with a proven track record of delivering results.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Excellent organizational skills - able to prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - able to work within a team
  • Comfortable experience working with technology (solutions)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (or equivalent) - Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Insurance/Claims handling knowledge
  • Relevant industry practice or Line of Business Experience
  • Insurance market, clients and claim management skills related to area of expertise
  • Strong networking skills
  • Strong problem solving capabilities
  • Ability to handle very complex and difficult negotiations and influence multiple stakeholders
  • Certification or licenses as required by jurisdiction
