Senior Manager, Communications

Overview

Position Summary

The Senior Manager, Communications manages and executes public relations activities for Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing. The Senior Manager oversees communications for off-sports-page and lifestyle outlets, supports functional areas of MLS and SUM, and works closely with all MLS clubs on communications strategy. 

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

 

Non-sports publicity

  • Manage strategic placement of MLS/SUM lifestyle (off-sports-page) and philanthropic stories, while developing relationships with media outlets
    • Creative storytelling and pitching (including volume) are key elements of this process
    • Manage the flow of incoming requests and inquiries from lifestyle media outlets
    • Work in conjunction with Consumer Products, Media, Marketing and other departments to place stories in non-sports/pop culture/entertainment media that prominently feature MLS
  • Support efforts of Vice President, Communications to develop the non-sports/corporate communications strategy for clubs and help with media placements in their markets
    • Focus on lifestyle, entertainment, millennial and youth media outlets
    • Support business communications, including serving as the stakeholder for select corporate partners
    • Work closely with specific MLS executives
  • Primarily manage communications strategy for MLS WORKS, the League’s community outreach initiative
  • Support Vice President, Communications in creating and maintaining talking points and positioning on various topics important to the League
  • In conjunction with Vice President, Communications, manage creation, editing and distribution of appropriate press releases and informational documents
  • Serve as project manager on various big event platforms and/or special projects
  • Monitor assigned MLS matches on weekday and weekend nights

 

Media Reporting

  • Manage MLS Communications media reporting and analytics including, but not limited to:
    • Producing a weekly, monthly and annual report using third-party software/vendors
  • Oversee relationships with third-party media analytics vendor(s)
  • Maintain clip packets and monitor coverage of MLS and SUM properties in non-sports media across the three official league languages (English, Spanish and French). Support efforts of Vice President, Communications with monthly media clip reports and integrate into media analytics reports

 

 

Planning & Administration

  • Manage MLS feature ideas and player profile content project
  • Manage publicity for various communications events and initiatives at MLS/SUM big events (MLS SuperDraft, MLS All-Star Game, MLS Cup etc.)
  • Work alongside Vice President, Communications on media plans for external communications, including press releases, announcements, interview preparation, panel discussions, conferences etc.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the Vice President, International Communications, contribute towards communications strategy of various SUM properties, including CONCACAF Gold Cup, Mexican National Team, various tours by international clubs, etc.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field is preferred
  • 5-8+ years of experience in public relations/communications is preferred

 

Required Skills

  • Strong communication skills with emphasis on writing and storytelling
  • Prior experience working with senior executives
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • High level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Demonstrated decision-making and problem solving skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

 

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of and passion for soccer preferred
  • Experience in the sports industry or at an agency
