Behavior Change Design Director

    • Boston, MA

Are you interested in applying behavioral science to the design, implementation, and evaluation of digital interventions and connected services in health and/or finance? Do you want to help industry change behaviors that matter and improve the health, wealth, and wellbeing of the people they serve?

Who we are

Mad*Pow is a purpose-driven, strategic design consultancy working with industry leaders to drive positive change and develop innovative products and services to improve the human condition - or at the very least make people's lives easier and more enriched. We've spent a decade honing our methodology, which merges behavioral science, technology, and human-centered design to tackle behavioral challenges and produce outcomes. We're looking for our next behavior change team member to collaborate on multi-disciplinary projects and ensure our work is built from solid science and research.

What you'll work on

We design digital interventions to change real-world behaviors. In health, that might mean prevention behaviors like designing and piloting a mobile application to reduce sitting time in offices or collaborating with the Truth Initiative on their digital smoking cessation intervention. We might also be aiming to increase access to services and help people manage a long-term condition, like bringing an in-clinic behavioral weight-loss program online for Joslin Diabetes Center or developing a mobile application to help people adhere to complex and/or unpleasant medication treatment regimens. In finance, we design programs to help people improve their overall financial wellbeing like developing a mobile game to help new military recruits avoid predatory lending practices, or designing and testing workplace benefits solutions to help low-wage, hourly workers even out swings in their take home pay and better manage debt.

What you'll bring

You are committed to applying theory, evidence, and rigor to a human-centered design process. You have experience using frameworks such as The Behavior Change Wheel or Intervention Mapping to design interventions and are enthusiastic (yet pragmatic) about the potential impacts of digital solutions to improve health, wealth, and wellbeing. You are comfortable upholding and advocating for scientific evidence and methods in a consultative, commercial development environment.

This is a full-time position offering a fun and exciting working environment in a rapidly growing company, competitive salary and great benefits. We will only look at candidates who can commute to our office in Boston, MA.

Role and responsibilities:

  • As a member of the Behavior Change Design team, you will lead research and design projects centered on changing real-world health and financial behaviors in addition to providing guidance and expertise on more transactional-focused work (e.g., adoption/uptake, engagement, task-completion).
  • Establish appropriate outcome measures and change objectives for the initiatives we undertake.
  • Translate theory and evidence to intervention design strategies and product/service components (e.g., materials, messages, features, functions, and interactions).
  • Lead client and internal team meetings, presentations, and workshops as appropriate.

Experience and Skills

  • Background in social science field such as behavioral science, psychology, sociology, economics or public health. Advanced degree is a plus but not a hard requirement.
  • Demonstrated experience designing behavioral interventions in one or more domains.
  • A passion for applying social science to digital design and development.
  • Ability to conduct and analyze qual, quant and desk research to produce actionable insights for intervention design.
  • Experience developing logic models, theory of change, or causal diagrams to visually communicate complex problems and/or intervention logic.
