This position will support the Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) mission in a technical role. AMT is an enterprise organization, responsible for managing the planning and execution of manufacturing research and development for Missiles and Fire Control (MFC), including Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) pilots for the Missiles and Fire Control enterprise. The employee selected for this job will provide automation integration technical support, as directed by the AMT Simulation and Data Analytics Senior Manager. The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated technical skills and experience in the discipline of automation engineering for a wide variety of manufacturing processes.
The successful candidate for this position will have broad and deep experience and technical skills in a range of disciplines important to automation engineering of the manufacturing and assembly of complex optical-mechanical-electrical systems and related functional testing; assembly and test of micro-electronic detector devices; precision machining; additive manufacturing (metal and plastic); metrology and related processes; precision optical components manufacturing; thin film coating systems; micro-electronics including hybrid packaging and wafer fabrication; and printed wiring board assembly.
Expected skills include deep understanding and experience with computer based systems needed for automation, including computer numerical control systems (Fanuc, Mazak, Hurco, Haas, Fagor), programmable logic controllers, motion controllers, robot controllers with integrated vision systems, human-machine interfaces, and networking and other information technology skills. Expected skills include integration of the controllers just described with PCs networks and servers.
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to investigate, transfer, and adapt automation controls processes, techniques, or methods to new applications. The successful candidate will also possess demonstrated excellent problem solving and analytical skills in one or more of the disciplines listed and be able to adapt those skills in support of solving manufacturing automation problems within MFC. The candidate must have experience with and/or be capable of learning a wide variety of manufacturing automation techniques. The candidate must have a history of continuous learning and demonstrated practice as an advocate of a teaching culture.
Very good written and verbal technical communication skills are required. The candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of the business and across a variety of functions (e.g. executive, technical and non-technical staff, external customers, program management, technicians, operators).
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Systems Engineering or other equivalent manufacturing relevant technical experience required.
Experience with open source microcontrollers such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi is desired. Experience with process monitoring, data collection and data analysis, MT Connect and OPC UA standard and protocols and XML expertise is desired. Experience with a represented workforce, regulatory Environmental Safety and Health, and DCMA procedures are desired skills. In addition, it is desired that the successful candidate will have project management skills required to meet schedule and cost commitments. Skills and deep understanding of lean/six sigma tools, MRP and MES systems, including quality management systems, and work instruction management systems is also desired.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a continuing, ongoing awareness of related new technologies and their potential impact to the business. Depth, and breadth in skills and/or experience across multiple disciplines of manufacturing automation related to the production of MFC products is strongly desired. Demonstrated small team leadership skills are desired. Knowledge of relevant military and ISO specifications is also strongly desired.
M.S. in the disciplines listed above or other equivalent manufacturing relevant technical experience is strongly desired.
