Mechanical Mechanisms Engineer (Littleton, CO or Huntsville, AL)
- Huntsville, AL
Description:The coolest jobs on this planet... or any other... are with Lockheed Martin Space!
Do you have a passion to get humans back to the moon and eventually to Mars? NASA has developed a vision for exploration that includes the development of a Human Lander System and a Gateway Habitat in the next 5 years. The nation received a White House mandate to place humans back on the surface of the Moon by 2024. Lockheed Martin Space is onboard to be part of this historic event and is looking to build a core team of highly-motivated engineers excited to be working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This is a rare opportunity for you to help NASA meet the challenges of the first step in achieving that "long-term presence at the Moon" and the stepping point for human missions to Mars.
We are currently seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to design and build mechanisms for spacecraft at Lockheed Martin. These critical components include anything that moves on the satellite, including hinges, gimbals, motors, gears, dampers, rotary joints, linear actuators, and deployables. Join the Lockheed Martin team and be a part of the company that has developed and flown the most innovative mechanism designs in the industry, including the largest mechanism ever deployed in space, the International Space Station Solar Array. The mechanisms design team supports all lines of business at Lockheed Martin which means you could be designing mechanisms for the next mission to Mars or for the next generation of GPS satellites or for systems that protect and defend our nation.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Establish the design of mechanisms, including requirements allocation, trade studies, solid modeling, materials evaluations, and analyses
- Participate in issue resolution and develop solutions to technical problems of varying complexity while assuring sound technical content and timely closure
- Develop, review, and maintain engineering documents, specifications, and technical analyses vital to support product build and testing activities
- Generate and release drawings using CAD software
- Collaborate with manufacturing personnel to supervise the build and test of the hardware in the production facility located next door to the engineering building
- May become the Certified Principal Engineer (CPE) for the mechanism. The CPE is the technical advocate responsible for all aspects of the mechanism from program inception to launch and on-orbit operations
- May become the Product Team Lead (PTL) for the mechanism(s) and asked to lead an integrated product team consisting of engineers, analysts, manufacturing personnel, and suppliers. The PTL will lead team meetings, be the point of contact with the program/customer, and lead design reviews, readiness reviews, and review boards. The PTL will also establish the detailed plan, manage the team to that plan, report cost and schedule performance, and report earned value management metrics.
The position has a preferred work location of Littleton, CO. Support from Huntsville, AL is also available.
