Who We Are Looking For

The Director of Academics will report to the Senior Vice President of Academics and serve as a member of the National Academic Team. The National Academic Team will be collectively responsible for high quality implementation of the LHA model. Each member of the National Academic Team will coordinate the efforts of stakeholders to ensure that the region's charters are viable and continuing to increase their level of service to the students and to the community. The Director of Academics will lead strategic initiatives across the assigned region's schools.

The Director of Academics is both a creative and a critical thinker who has a wealth of experience in leading highly effective schools, districts or networks. They are not satisfied with what is "typical" in urban education and are constantly seeking effective ways to bring world-class educational opportunities to all students. Regional Directors are solutions-oriented with an entrepreneurial spirit and they thrive in highly challenging circumstances. They leverage their exceptional communication skills and their strength in building relationships with others to collaborate on the solutions to complex problems.


This position will support the SVP of Academics in leading all instructional, academic, and social-emotional learning efforts across the network with a focus on the primary level. While the efforts of the academic team are primarily focused on the instructional aspects of our schools, LHA recognizes the tangible impact that the academic team has on the quality of instruction scholars receive as well as on the smooth functioning of the academic programs.

The Director of Academics will be the strategic and tactical leader in the following areas:

  1. Strategic Planning and Strategic Implementation (30%) - Collaborates with the SVP of Academics, the National Academic Team, and regional/district leaders on the development, implementation and monitoring of strategic plans at the network, region (district) and school level, including the instructional approach, curriculum plan, assessment strategy, teacher development plan, school leader development plan, district/regional leader development plan, special education plan, school culture and climate plan, social-emotional learning plan and intervention programming. This work will be done with a focus on national design element initiatives. .
  2. Support and Monitoring of Instructional Excellence (20%) - Ensures that students reach their potential through the coaching and development of school leaders as assigned, resulting in the attainment of students' growth goals and the attainment of academic performance goals.
  3. Professional Development (30%) - Assists in the design and facilitation of network-wide leader professional learning institutes focused on Lighthouse Academies' core design elements and signature practices. Collaborates with the Senior Vice President of Academics in developing and implementing pilot professional development initiatives as needed, such as an Exceptional Teacher Project, an Emerging Leader Project, and a Diverse Learner Project to further advance the success of key design elements.
  4. Other Duties as Assigned (20%) - Ensures scholar success across the network by performing additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or better in K-12 Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Urban Turnaround experience or program completion
  • 7 years of public and charter experience with at least 3 of those leading academics in charter schools at the primary level
  • Experience delivering a world-class student experience
  • A proven track record of school or district-level academic success in urban environments

  • Strong understanding of data platforms and use of data to improve student outcomes
  • Previous teaching experience

  • Belief that all children can learn and that it is the responsibility of the schools to enable them to reach their potential
  • Ability to re-imagine what is possible in public education and to continually make possibilities a reality for students
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a natural tendency toward collaboration
  • Demonstrated abilities as a self-starter
  • Strong ability to influence and motivate others in a virtual setting
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work with all stakeholders and all levels of management
  • Strong organization, problem solving and analytical skills
