Intern Pharmacist

Position Summary:
Gain an understanding of community pharmacy by performing all duties in the pharmacy, including preparing and dispensing prescribed medications, drugs, and other pharmaceuticals for patient care according to professional standards and state/federal legal requirements while under the supervision of a pharmacist. Fred Meyer also requires that all associates perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with corporate policies and state and federal laws. Essential Job Functions:

  • Model "Customer 1 st " behavior; deliver and encourage other associates to deliver excellent customer service
  • Review prescriptions issued by health care providers to confirm accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients needed
  • Prepare medications using standard formulas and processes, such as weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients
  • Verify new medication against existing medication and patient profile to verify that there are no drug-drug or drug-disease interactions prior to filling the prescription
  • Direct pharmacy associates engaged in mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals
  • Verify the work of the pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants, including accuracy of all prescriptions filled
  • Provide information to pharmacy customers regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage of pharmaceuticals
  • Maintain established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs
  • Maintain pharmacy files and inventory
  • Create and maintain purchase orders for medication
  • Open and close department
  • Perform Person in Charge (PIC) duties
  • Promote and follow company initiatives
  • Administer immunizations as allowed by the State Boards of Pharmacy
  • Maintain flexibility to work any shift
  • Supervise and coach pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants in the performance of their duties
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Licensed intern making satisfactory progress in an Accreditation Council for a Pharmacy Education approved college of pharmacy
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Accuracy/attention to detail
  • Ability to organize/prioritize tasks/projects
  • Familiarity with industry/technical terms/processes
  • Ability to work within set time frames and meet fixed deadlines
  • Ability to continue education
  • Valid CPR/first aid certification
  • Valid annual bloodborne pathogens (BBP) training certification
  • Hepatitis B documentation
  • Valid State Board of Pharmacy license from state of employment
  • APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate or equivalent as allowed by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of employment
Desired Previous Job Experience:
  • Knowledge of Fred Meyer policies, procedures, and organizational structure
  • Six months customer service experience
  • Related retail experience
