Position Summary:
Provide leadership and subject matter expertise to support retail, corporate brands, merchandising, operations, logistics, store planning/design, digital and home delivery, and other departments within Kroger. Lead the product recall process, corporate brands label review process, retail food safety programs, and assists in major regulatory activities surrounding food safety and regulatory compliance for the enterprise. Perform all jobs safely, efficiently and accurately to maintain and improve the performance of the entire facility in the areas of Safety, Quality, Reliability (SQR) and our Customer 1 st strategy. Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise, coach, and provide ongoing feedback for development of direct reports; complete performance reviews and track performance of managed projects
  • Engage with internal business partners to stay informed of merchandising and operational programs
  • Provide strategic direction for food safety activities, goals, and metrics across the enterprise in relation to the network of Division Food Safety Managers
  • Maintain networking/working relationship with contacts from Federal (FDA, USDA) and State regulators and the regulatory community
  • Manage relationship with third-party chemical supplier and store food safety and sanitation audit providers to drive effective, calibrated efforts for retail store audits and appropriate chemical use for sanitation; work with vendor to provide a reporting website that enables efficient reporting/corrective action capabilities
  • Interpret proposed and final FDA/USDA regulations published in the Federal Register and FDA Food Code; develop Kroger policies and procedures
  • Technical resource to the Kroger Crisis Management Team as it relates to food regulations/food safety issues
  • Maintain networking contacts with Trade Group Organizations (FMI, IAFP, AFDO, etc.)
  • Provide food safety/regulatory technical consultation, assistance, training, and direction to Kroger departments
  • Communicate to General Office Departments, Senior Leadership, Divisions, or outside regulatory agencies concerning any major regulatory or food safety issues
  • Follow established programs, policies and practices to produce safe, quality foods that meet regulatory and company requirements
  • Support the development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the SQF Systems

Minimum Position Qualifications/Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Regulatory Compliance or a related field
  • 10 years of experience in the food industry, primarily with FDA/USDA regulated products
  • Sound understanding of prerequisite food safety programs, HACCP and TCS
  • Working knowledge of sanitary design of food processing/handling equipment at retail store level
  • A high-level understanding of retail food processes and understanding of the regulatory arena to meet the requirements of local, state and federal food safety guidelines
  • Effective oral/written communication skills for non-regulatory audiences
Desired Previous Job Experience:
  • Managing regulatory compliance, food safety, microbiological, and chemical issues/programs
  • Trained in GMP, HACCP, and vendor approval programs
  • Knowledge of General Merchandise CPSC Regulations
  • Crisis Management Team Experience
