Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer

Kforce has a client in search of a Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer in Reston, VA.Key Tasks:

  • Designing, analyzing, and tuning spacecraft attitude and position control loops using time and frequency domain techniques
  • Designing, analyzing, and tuning sequential filters (e.g. Kalman filters) for attitude determination and relative navigation
  • Analyzing and testing the spacecraft GNC subsystem performance using simulations and other analytic tools
  • Implementing GNC algorithms in flight software and support flight software qualification testing
  • Performing analysis to support early design phase concept development including actuator sizing and placement, sensor selection and placement, and predicted performance assessments
  • Developing simulation models for sensors (e.g. star tracker, rate gyro, accelerometer, GPS, magnetometer, sun sensors), actuators (e.g. reaction wheel, torque bar, thruster, CMG), system dynamics (e.g. rigid body, multi-body, orbit mechanics, flexible models), and the space environment (e.g. atmospheric, solar radiation pressure, third-body gravity, geopotential)
  • Applying engineering principles, industry standards, company process, and knowledge of vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, classical/modern control, and estimation theory to perform tasks to advanced program/project goals
  • Documenting designs, analysis, and test results and create presentation materials
  • Presenting designs, analysis, and test results to internal and external customers
  • Working well within small- to medium-sized groups


  • 14 years of industry experience with a STEM degree (or 12 years with Masters; 9 years with PhD)
  • 5 years of spacecraft GNC experience
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or PhD
  • More than 5 years of spacecraft GNC experience
