Sr. Manager, of NPD Effectiveness

Ethicon Inc., a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a/n Sr. Manager, NPD Effectiveness, located in Cincinnati, OH or Somerville, NJ.

Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. was created 20 years ago in Cincinnati, Ohio, developing innovative devices that have driven the revolutionary shift from open to minimally invasive surgery that continues to lead the industry today.

The R&D Product Development Director is responsible for leading creation, operation & dissolution of multi-functional teams, focused to execute product acquisition & development projects in accordance with criteria specified in contracts between the teams & Ethicon Board of Directors. Ensuring product development teams implement, support & deliver business results consistent with Ethicon business strategy. Demonstrating leadership in a non-traditional, non-hierarchical environment without extensive staff support.


- Working closely with R&D VP's Platform Leadership Teams, Sponsor Teams and NPD teams in the development of the NPD Effectiveness strategy across multiple R&D platforms

- Map the current state NPD process (including Design To Value, Design Control), governance, skills (including Project Management) and culture and identify most impactful opportunities across these areas to drive improvements to NPD effectiveness

- Identify the most critical metrics to track NPD performance, including value creation, quality, cycle time, schedule attainment, profit margin, employee engagement, etc. and measure improvement resulting from change initiatives

- Lead critical change initiatives to improve the agility and rigor of new product development leading to validated improvement in target metrics

- Maintenance of Project Management and DTV Excellence resources, processes and tools

- Dissemination of the Project Management and DTV tools and training for R&D Project Leaders and all leadership levels Continuous improvement of new product development and consistency of practices through maturity model definition and improvement planning


Personnel management- Lead human resources (associates & / or contractors) as defined by project or team organization structure

- Match human resources to project needs

- Assess performance of human resources

- Coach, counsel & assess training needs of individual associates

- Recommend compensation & rewards for individual associates

Departmental administration

- Manage financial resources

- Manage facilities & logistics

- Monitor & optimize organizational effectiveness


- Estimate project or service resource requirements

- Define specific project or service deliverables

- Manage actual performance to plans

- Manage project or service risks & constraints

- End-Customer/Stakeholder support

- Follow-up on customer needs & requests through resolution & deployment

- Work with Vendors/Suppliers/Partners to meet end-customer/stakeholder needs

- Measure customer satisfaction


- Plan long-range architecture migrations

- Identify technical architecture gaps

- Assess impact of new technologies & information requirements

- Define & deploy the Strategic Planning Process

- Disseminate strategic directions & directives

Quality Administration

- Define, develop, & maintain standards & procedures

- Track any assigned error analysis & corrective action

- Define quality measures

- Monitor & benchmark performance against quality measures

- Integrate, align and simplify quality system procedures


- Ability to map and analyze key business processes

- Apply business process analysis findings to build/improve key PLM systems

- BS / BA degree, required

- Advanced degree desirable

- Black Belt certification desirable

- Project Management Professional (or equivalent) certification desirable

- Knowledge of Design/Development/Life Cycle Management procedures and systems, preferred

- Leadership of change initiatives, preferred
