Project Engineering Director

Role Location: Limerick, Ireland or Jacksonville, Florida
Travel: 50% international
Position Summary
Leads multiple teams of engineers and project managers (~5 direct reports; ~10 contract indirect reports, ~20 FTE) to execute project management programs for J&J VisionCare (JJVC)globally. Engage with R&D and equipment development teams to anticipate and plan for future products and projects.
Responsible for budget and timeline for project execution to support JJVC capacity expansion and cost improvement programs. Advises project activities in alignment with business objectives in the areas of capacity expansion, cost improvement, quality improvement, and new product introductions. Possesses a high degree of project management competence to get results and project execution.
Significant people leadership and talent development skills to recruit, develop, lead, motivate, and train project managers to establish high functioning project teams for excellence in execution.
Develop strategies and governance methods to establish new projects and track performance of projects to support aligned business goals. Reports to the JJVC Sr Director of Engineering.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
Directly responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of global projects ensuring consistency with business strategy, commitments and goals. This includes defining, identifying and securing appropriate internal and external resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan.
Recruits, develops, manages, trains, and motivates a highly proficient group of diverse technical specialists in pursuit of company goals. Uses talent within and outside of immediate organization to maximize efficiencies, ensure appropriate SME skills are available, and capitalize on significant opportunities or address significant issues.
Directs / leads technical activities across the areas of quality, delivery/capacity, and cost by proactively seeing opportunities and executing projects and tasks to improve supply reliability and avoid / resolve issues in alignment with business objectives and metrics.
Engages with new product development (NPD) teams to ensure a robust, capable, and sustainable supply chain. Partners multi-functionally to lead / influencing the development and execution of project CTQs and timing, SC strategy, and technical landmarks in pursuit of the NPD business objectives.
Develops engineering and project management systems and strategies, in alignment and support of business objectives through appropriate governance and metrics. Develops and justifies department business plans, in alignment and support of company objectives, and manages the related department capital and expense budgets and assets.
Other Duties
- Develop a department development and succession plan for key positions.
- Participate in various technology and innovation teams, and functional and multi-functional business governance processes and forums for the purpose of sharing experience, benchmarking and standard methodologies, business management, and providing talent visibility and rotation opportunities.
- Establish and build relationships with other project management teams and organizations across the J&J Enterprise.
- Identify and build suitable external contacts
- Contribute to the strategic direction of VC through thought leadership and external benchmarking
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Required Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science or related technical degree. MS/ MBA prefered.
Required Years of Related Experience:
12 years plus
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in or significant support of a manufacturing environment.
- Experience in or significant support of medical product or equivalent regulated / controlled product.
- 10+ years of demonstrated people and team management skills.
- Demonstrated ability creating business plans/cases and manage related departmental budgets.
- Basic computer skills (word processing, Excel, etc.) and ability to quickly learn new programs.
- Experience in solving problems in automated equipment.
Preferred Related Industry Experience : Automated Equipment Experience
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: FPX Certification; Project Management Certification
Key Working Relationships
Internal
Coordinate projects with site MAKE engineering director and Global Process Engineering Director to enable JJVC goals.
Work with R&D / Technology Development groups to anticipate projects for new products, new lines, and fleet retrofits.
External
Machine builders to include Tokyo Automatic Machinery, Harro Hofliger, Yushin Automation, and Modular Automation. Maintain relationships to forecast future orders, prioritize current project suite, and resolve issues.
