Our Discovery Technology and Molecular Pharmacology (DTMP) organization is looking for a Principal Scientist, Lead Evaluation Process & Screening Automation within the Compound, Data Management & Screening Automation team at the La Jolla, CA site

This Principal Scientist will have the following major responsibilities:
  • Lead day-to-day operation of laboratory automation and automated assays to support Lead Evaluation and Compound Profiling screening activities
  • Support end-user automated workflows through method development, error recovery, equipment troubleshooting and assay execution
  • Asset management, troubleshooting and maintenance of implemented robotic systems and standalone instrumentation
  • Implementation of automation projects, involving system design and prototyping, factory/site acceptance testing, method implementation, and end-user training and support
  • Programming, operation and troubleshooting of liquid handling platforms or integrated robotic systems, such as Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter, Agilent/Velocity11, Thermo Scientific™, or HighRes® Biosolutions, etc.
  • Transition manual workflows onto automated assay systems and optimize existing automated processes and platforms to improve efficiency, throughput, robustness and quality
  • Configure, program and troubleshoot laboratory automated platforms and work closely with vendors to ensure timely repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Author, execute and document test plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for automated workflows
  • Coordinate with multi-functional teams and execute projects in a timely manner
  • Monitor and evaluate new and emerging technologies in laboratory automation systems

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's, Master's Degree or Advanced Degree is required, in molecular biology, chemistry, engineering or related subject area
  • Minimum 10 or more years' experience in automation, liquid handling and/or assay screening experience is preferred
  • Experience in managing technology infrastructure supporting hit identification and lead optimization is preferred
  • Experience in design and implementing of complex cell biology assay workflows and automation system is preferred
  • Hardware/programming experience with robotic liquid handlers such as Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman, Agilent and robotic integration / scheduling software such as HighRes Biosolutions Cellario or Thermo Scientific Momentum is preferred
  • People management experience including the management of Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. scientists/engineers and/or contractors is preferred
  • Project management mind-set - ability to handle project plans, dependencies, critical path activities and achievements is preferred
  • Understanding of data analysis and visualization software such as Prism, Genedata, and Spotfire is preferred
