Weapon Control System Systems Engineer

Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Weapons Control Systems System Engineer.

Job Summary: Work in a multi-discipline environment to define and evaluate systems, software and hardware engineering requirements, architecture, and design level products in support of a weapons control system (WCS) for Department of Navy (DoN) surface combatants/submarines.

Duties:

  • Serve as a systems engineer, performing definition and analysis of system, hardware and software requirements including traceability and testability, interfaces (external and internal), architecture (including DoDAF 2.0), and design products. Identify discrepancies and provide actionable recommendations to achieve system capabilities. (50%)
  • Conduct research, studies, and engineering analyses, and propose concepts or solutions to address technical issues and concerns. Provide recommendations and supporting data to advise our sponsors. Develop technical documentation such as analysis of alternatives, white papers, and cost benefit analyses, communicating with warfighters as needed. (35%)
  • Assist in the definition and execution of systems engineering processes (requirements analysis, system architecture definition, functional allocation, system engineering reviews, and design validation/verification/test) for Department of Defense Acquisition Programs. (5%)
  • Effectively communicate analysis process, results, conclusions, and proposed concepts or solutions. Develop and deliver formal presentations to sponsor and multi-organizational team. (10%)

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in systems engineering, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline. Ability to understand and assess system, software and hardware requirements and design. Knowledge of the Systems Engineering processes. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, and ability to work as part of a multi-organizational team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • M.S. in systems engineering, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline. A minimum of three years of relevant systems engineering experience to include in system requirements, performing functional analysis and allocation, conducting trade studies, and Systems Engineering lifecycle processes.

Special Working Conditions: Periodic travel required to sponsor and contractor worksites within the continental US; approximately one day per month.

Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
