User Interface Software Engineer
Introduction: The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JH APL), an independent, nonprofit organization that conducts essential research, development, and systems engineering to address national security challenges, located in central Maryland is seeking a creative Senior Software Engineer to join a large systems engineering Group of technical staff who take pride in achieving practical, operationally sound solutions to complex problems, with a focus on innovation, affordability, and timeliness.
Job Summary: Participate in the design and development of advanced 3D visualization software in support of the CERBERUS Project. Development is currently in Unity / C# but may transition to NASA Worldwind (Java) or Cesium / STK (C ). CERBERUS is a fast-paced, innovative, prototype development task focused on improving the warfighter's mission planning capabilities.
Duties (Listed in order of importance):
- Participate in cross-enterprise teams to design and develop advanced 3D/2D visualization software of Aegis Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) planning concepts to enhance the warfighter's planning capabilities. Development is in C , C#, Java, and Python.
- Design and implement components for the user interface to include interactive 3D objects and behaviors, digital terrain elevation data with mapping service, menus, forms, digital nautical charts and related overlays. Work includes algorithm design and implementation, simplifying complex systems behind common interfaces, and robust testing using various frameworks.
- Deliver formal presentations to Sponsors and the Engineering Community and effectively communicate proposed concepts / designs / solutions. Produce documentation to capture concept definitions, requirements, design decisions, and technical recommendations.

Required Qualifications: BS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent. Minimum of 3 years programming experience and proficiency with User Interface development in Java, C , C#, or Python. Experience working successfully within a team environment either at school or in the work place. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Active SECRET clearance or ability to obtain INTERIM SECRET clearance.
Desired Qualifications: MS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent. Five or more years programming experience and proficiency with User Interface development in Java, C , C#, or Python. Experience developing large scale software systems. Strong analytical and logical skills and attention to detail. Proven success working in a multi-disciplinary team environments. Working knowledge of the Aegis BMD System, Tactical Data Links, Command and Control Systems, and/or Common Services. Active TOP SECRET and SCI clearances.
Special Working Conditions: Travel (10% or more) to local and remote contractor facilities for meetings and reviews as necessary. Travel to support occasional test events involving extended or evening hours, travel aboard ships and to field site activities.
Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
