Truck Driver


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Truck/Shuttle Bus Driver.

Job Summary:

To provide support within the drivers functions, primarily for pickup and delivery of equipment and mail packages within the continental U.S.


  1. Operating motor vehicles, including those over 32,000 and up to 80,000 lbs. gvw, for purposes of picking up and /or delivering mail, miscellaneous freight, delicate equipment and messages throughout the continental U.S. Perform interstate and intrastate over-the-road driving utilizing straight trucks and tractor-trailers. This includes: loading trucks and ensuring the cargo is properly secured. (75%)

  2. Drives APL shuttle bus. Transport passengers and equipment internally and externally on APL campuses. Performs special bus tours for APL and sponsors. Chauffeurs lab guests and VIPs to/from designated areas.(10%)

  3. Performs fueling and inspection of trucks/buses. Records vehicle issues and concerns on a vehicle inspection report in compliance with DOT and FHSA regulations.(5%)

4 .Maintains cleanliness, safety and operational understanding of vehicles driven.(5%)

  1. Assists in other areas within the BMD group a driver and/or materials handler as needed. (5%)

Required Qualifications:

Must have two years driving experience and possess a class A CDL with passenger, HAZMAT, and air brake endorsements. Possess valid DOT medical card. Subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Drives vehicles up to 32,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. Complies with all DOT and MVA rules and regulations to maintain a CDL. Capable of fueling, cleaning and maintaining APL owned vehicles (e.g., trucks, buses, etc.). Must work well independently and within a team environment with strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Good attendance, punctuality, strong time management skills, safety focused and accountable. High school diploma or equivalent, with the ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

Desired Qualifications:

Basic computer skills including Microsoft Outlook (email) and e-time.

Familiarity with electronic logging devices.

Must obtain forklift license.

Special Working Conditions:

Flexibility to work an 8 hour daily schedule with overtime hours, as needed. May be subject to random DOT drug testing. Safety shoes required.

Security Clearance:

Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for a NAC/LAC and access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
