Systems Engineering Analyst – Undersea Warfare

Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Undersea Warfare Analyst to lead and/or participate in studies of national security related issues involving undersea warfare systems.

Job Summary: Provide expertise and leadership to conduct the analysis and assessment of individual undersea warfare systems or combinations of systems that form a broader capability. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive knowledge of the undersea mission domain, the capability to think broadly at both the operational and systems level, and the ability to lead or facilitate a multidisciplinary team.

Duties:

  • Lead or participate in analyses to evaluate undersea warfare system performance against diverse threats to identify impacts on mission, operations effectiveness or survivability. Explore alternative solutions utilizing technology, operational behavior, materiel, tactics or doctrine. (50%)
  • Identify and guide the development and application of models and tools for system operations and threat analysis employing techniques such as parametric and non-parametric statistics, application of physics based simulations with existing or novel models, optimization methods, data mining, or predictive analytics. (25%)
  • Develop analysis plans, lead inter/intra organizational teams, conduct analyses, interpret results and develop recommendations for improving platform security and the ability to meet mission requirements in an undersea threat domain. (15%)
  • Document results in written reports and briefings for both sponsor and management audiences that support decisions of strategic value to sponsor programs. (10%)

Required Qualifications: B.S. degree in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research or other relevant technical discipline. Ten or more years of relevant experience with maritime system platforms and components, naval operations, tactics and doctrine. Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools to augment empirical analysis to support technical assessment and performance of both US and adversary maritime systems. Effective written and verbal skills and experience with sponsor interaction and product delivery.

Desired Qualifications: M.S. degree with fifteen or more years of experience in leading or performing quantitative and qualitative analyses. Demonstrated understanding of features and patterns in data that identify the characteristics and behaviors of systems or components. Experience in the Undersea Warfare domain.

Special Working Conditions: Limited travel and working in closed areas required.

Security: Top Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for an SSBI and access to classified information. Preference for current SSBI. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
