Software Systems Engineer - Modeling and Simulation
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a motivated Software Engineer.
Job Summary: The Force-Level Computing and Systems Development Group (A3A) of the Air and Missile Defense Sector (AMDS) is looking for a Software Engineer to develop system/software models and prototypes related to electronic warfare systems for the US Navy.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
- Perform model development, test and system analysis for various Navy Electronic Warfare systems. Design, develop, and test system models in various programming languages. Models will be used to inform development of deployed systems and verify algorithm design and implementation. Development is done in a collaborative, team based environment taking advantage of Agile development methodologies. Design and development activities encompass all aspects of the software development life-cycle including algorithm prototyping from notional concepts and written specifications, unit, integration, and regression testing and presentation of results. (50%)
- Analyze individual model and end-to-end system output to assess performance, adherence to stated specification and recommend model and system design improvements. Activities include analysis script creation, data reduction and analysis, and data visualization. (40%)
- Contribute to system-level design and analysis. Perform system engineering activities to inform model design and enhance system performance and improve automated testing and analysis capabilities. (5%)
- Communicate development design, implementation, and results to teammates and task/program leadership through reports and presentations. Participate in collaboration activities consistent with Agile software development methodologies. Communication includes peer reviews and formal presentations. (5%)

Required Qualifications: BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or equivalent. Demonstrated skills in computer programming with C , Java, object oriented programming, or MATLAB. Good communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment.
Desired Qualifications: MS in computer engineering/science with strong EE/physics/math background. Experience with modern software development, distributed computing and messaging services, Agile software development methodologies. Knowledge of Electronic Warfare methods, Kalman filtering, and tracking. Experience in surface Navy combat systems (particularly Electronic Warfare) or other related work (e.g. other BMD systems).
