Software Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Software Engineer.

Job Summary: Responsible for software development tasks including backend logic/models, GUIs, and physics based system models and simulations for various projects within several programs.


  • Implement production code and unit tests (60%)
  • Assist with design of software products(20%)
  • Deploy software to end user systems (10%)
  • Interface with testers to ensure they can properly test the product (10%)

Required Qualifications:

B. S. or equivalent in Computer Science or Engineering and at least 5 years relevant professional level experience to include strong grasp of object oriented design practices, full life-cycle development via the agile development process, and software deployment practices. Applied experience in C . Familiarity with C 11 and 14 standards. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Must work effectively in a team environment and be able to multi-task and support multiple development projects concurrently. The ideal candidate should have strong initiative, creativity, breadth of experience, and a love of learning.

Desired Qualifications:

M.S. in Computer Science or Engineering and at least 7 years relevant professional experience. Exposure to physics based modeling and simulation techniques in distributed environments. Familiarity with Visual C , Java, Eclipse, Qt, 3D graphics, 3D game engines (such as Unity), JavaScript, working with relational databases, unit test frameworks, and DVCS (such as Git). Development experience on multiple operating systems.

Special Working Conditions: Some US travel may be required, not likely to exceed a few trips per year with no more than four days in duration for each.

Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
