Software Engineer - Computer Vision

Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Software Engineer - Computer Vision.

Job Summary: Perform software engineering and computer vision algorithm development on unmanned air, sea, and underwater vehicles. Perform full lifecycle software development in a small team environment. Duties would include concept development for unmanned vehicle applications, algorithm development, software engineering and field testing.


  1. Software and Algorithm development for computer vision, image processing, machine learning, and data fusion on unmanned air, ground, and sea platforms to enable navigation/sensing in challenging environments. (80%)
  2. Document algorithmic approaches, test results, prepare technical reports, present results, and demonstrate system capabilities to peer review groups, partners, working groups, and sponsors.(20%)

Required Qualifications: B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or other related technical discipline with 3 years of relevant experience to include a minimum of 1-2 years of prior Computer Vision and/or Machine Learning development experience. Experience in C/C++ software development and OpenCV. Team player with excellent written and oral skills. The ideal candidate will possess initiative, creativity, breadth of knowledge and a desire for continuous learning.

Desired Qualifications: M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering with at least 3-5 years of prior Computer Vision and/or Machine Learning development experience . Prior experience developing software for unmanned platforms. Experience in developing near-real-time software for embedded Linux platforms, C/C++, and OpenCV. Additionally, exposure to any or all of the following technologies is beneficial: CUDA, GPGPU computing, Caffe, MATLAB, Boost C++ libraries. Familiarity with embedded programming principles and algorithm optimization for resource-constrained platforms.

Special Working Conditions: Must be willing to travel approximately one week at a time (4 weeks/year) and participate in field testing.
