Software Engineer


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a software engineer.

Job Summary:

Design and develop software applications for use in the engineering and deployment of novel RF communications devices and systems for the intelligence community.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  1. Work closely with signal processing and communications engineers to develop applications (Microsoft Windows, Linux, libraries, embedded, DSP, etc.) and tools used for data acquisition, control, and analysis associated with advanced RF communication technologies. Implement current and develop new communication protocols for cross-platform processing. (70%)

  2. Rapidly migrate real-time data analysis tools and signal exploitation algorithms to platform specific applications. Participate in field evaluation of applications. Rapidly modify/update software in field according to test results and in response to emergent technical and operational requirements. (20%)

  3. Develop and document formal and informal software requirements and specifications from written high-level specifications and simulations of operational algorithms to support development and testing. Document and present work to sponsors and the technical community. (10%)

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, physics, math, or equivalent. Experience developing software applications for Microsoft Windows environment. Strong oral and written communication skills. Good organizational skills. Demonstrated experience in coding in C, C#, and/or C . Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, and demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-organizational team.

Desired Qualifications:

Familiarity with Windows graphics programming, TCP/IP networking software. Familiarity with basic RF communications and digital signal processing concepts. Familiarity with Matlab, experience migrating Matlab code to stand-alone applications. Willingness to work on quick-reaction projects in support of the sponsor's operational requirements.

Special Working Conditions [Travel, working in closed areas, extended hours]: Limited travel required. Must be eligible for DOD clearance requiring background investigation and/or CI polygraph. Preference for current SSBI.
