Introduction: The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JH APL), an independent, nonprofit organization that conducts essential research, development, and systems engineering to address national security challenges, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a creative Software Engineer.
Job Summary: Participate in a team environment to develop and utilize tools to advance command and control concepts, algorithms, and techniques for Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD). Utilize these tools to (a) advance existing modeling and simulation capabilities, (b) prototype new command and control algorithms, and (c) evaluate innovative concepts and alternatives.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
- Participate in development of software algorithms and analysis tools for both a Command and Decision simulation and a Weapon Control simulation written in C , Python, and MatLab. Work includes algorithm design, implementation, software testing, and associated documentation (50%)
- Participate in brainstorming and analysis working groups to discuss and evaluate concepts, alternatives, and approaches for IAMD and BMDS command, control, and communications. (40%)
- Deliver formal presentations to Sponsors and engineering community, effectively communicate proposed concepts / solutions, and analysis results. Produce documentation to capture concept definitions, requirements, analysis results, and technical recommendations. (10%)

BS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent. Proficiency with MatLab, Python, Java, C and/or C programming languages. Experience using Microsoft Office products including PowerPoint and Excel. Experience working successfully within a team environment either at school or in the work place. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to obtain INTERIM SECRET clearance or Active SECRET clearance.
MS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent. Three years experience developing software using C, C , MatLab and/or Python. Experience developing variable fidelity models and simulations. Strong analytical and logical skills and attention to detail. Proven success working in multi-disciplinary team environments. Working knowledge of the Aegis BMD System, Tactical Data Links, Command and Control Systems, and/or Common Services. Active TOP SECRET and SCI clearance.
Special Working Conditions: Travel (20% or more) to local and remote contractor facilities for meetings and reviews as necessary. Travel to support occasional test events involving extended or evening hours, travel aboard ships and to field site activities.
Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
