Software Defined Radio Electronic Warfare Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Software Defined Radio Electronic Warfare Engineer

Job Summary: The candidate will be responsible for designing embedded and software defined radio (SDR) systems for applications in electronic warfare (EW), communications, and geolocation systems technology. The candidate must have an understanding of SDR programming and hardware.


  • Develop and implement new concepts for EW, digital radio frequency memory (DRFM), distributed sensing, cognitive radios. (50%)
  • Work with other engineers to determine and develop SDR applications in air surveillance and geolocation systems. (20%)
  • Deploy, integrate, and test the concepts/prototypes, working closely with the sponsor or other project partners to ensure mission success. (20%)
  • Analyze emerging SDR technologies and applications. Evaluate direction of the SDR industry and make recommendations to government and APL leadership. (5%)
  • Brief, document, and report on testing/integration outcomes. (5%)

Required Qualifications: BS degree in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics or a closely related discipline with at least 2 years of relevant experience. An understanding of SDR technologies including analog and digital RF hardware, digital signal processing, data link networks, and real-time systems. Expertise with several of the following tools: C, C 11, Python, Boost C libraries, CUDA, computer networking, distributed computing, and Linux internals.

Desired Qualifications: MS degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a closely related discipline. At least 5 years of experience working as a software developer interfacing with hardware systems. Experience with SDR technology on military and/or commercial systems. Familiarity with GNUradio, VHDL, Verilog, USRP Hardware Driver (UHD), ZeroMQ, Qt, Matlab, python, as well as the tools listed above. Experience with Air Force, Navy, or other DoD programs.

Special Working Conditions: Some travel for field test and working in closed areas. Occassional irregular working hours.

Security: Top Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Top Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
