Senior Software Engineer

Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Software Engineer.

Job Summary: The Combat System Development and Assessment Group (A3B) of the Air and Missile Defense Sector (AMDS) is seeking an individual to perform software development and lead development efforts as part of a team utilizing Modeling and Simulation (M&S) to address complex Air and Missile Defense (AMD) real-world challenges.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  • Software development and integration of real-time and/or event driven models representing current or future tactical system behavior. Tasks include software design, implementation, integration, and testing. (40%)

Lead software development activities performed by other team members; oversee software requirements, design, implementation, and testing efforts. (30%)

  • Research and consultation with Subject Matter Experts to identify software requirements. (20%)

  • Documentation and presentations of software designs/implementations and M&S results.(10%)

    Required Qualifications:

    B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Physics. Five years experience with C or Java. Interest in leading software development teams. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Motivated self-starter and independent learner with strong problem solving skills.

    Desired Qualifications:

    M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Physics. Seven years experience in software development with at least three year of C in a UNIX/Linux environment. Three years experience leading software development teams. Proficiency in real-time software development in a UNIX/Linux environment. Familiarity with scripting and analysis languages such as Python, Perl, and MATLAB. Broad knowledge of software development methodologies, best practices, and tools. Experience with Navy or DoD tactical systems.

    Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel for meetings and program reviews. Some work may be after normal working hours or at government facilities.

    Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
