The Research & Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) recently stood-up a new technical group, the Intelligent Systems Group (ISG). The ISG is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focused on developing the next generation of intelligent systems for the U.S. Government. The current emphasis of the ISG is on machine learning, autonomy, applied neuroscience, and robotics. The ISG is seeking a Senior Neuroscientist.
The Intelligent Systems Group within the Research and Exploratory Development Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated senior neuroscientist to lead and/or support computational neuroscience research efforts in the areas of neural connectomics, deep learning, and image processing.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
- 1) Utilize image processing and machine learning methods to process and analyze neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and other neural data in order to understand essential elements of brain function that may be translated to neuromimetic learning algorithms. (35%)
2) Utilize and adapt data processing, deep learning and/or other methods in computer vision and machine learning to process and analyze various neural, image, audio, and video data sets for the development of discriminative and generative models. (25%)
3) Develop multi-scale models (cellular, circuit, higher architectures) of neural functionalities related to visual and auditory signal processing, learning, memory, and planning. Develop neuromimetic and alternative computing algorithms for solving complex signal processing problems. (20%)
5) Work with program office for reporting technical accomplishments and project deliverables, and to engage sponsor organizations for communicating capabilities and impact of research and develop concepts of operation with mission relevance. (10%)
6) Work with program office and technical staff to prepare scientific manuscripts and whitepapers summarizing results for conferences and peer review journals and for sponsor engagement. (10%)

PhD in Neuroscience. Five years of demonstrated experience in analyzing and processing neuroanatomical and/or neurophysiological data, developing neural models, neuromimetic and machine learning algorithms, data processing and visualization, and utilization of signal processing tools such as Matlab, Python and C#/C /C. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to articulate complex technical issues effectively and appropriately for a wide range of audiences.
Extensive experience in software programming, scripting (e.g. Matlab, Python) and neural modeling tools (e.g. NEURON, Brain). Expertise in the design, development and implementation of data and image processing algorithms/systems and visualization. Experience with human subjects testing. Broad experience in neuroscience and understanding of systems neuroscience. Strong publication record.
