Senior Mechanical / Aerospace Engineer - Structures
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an experienced, highly skilled, and well motivated Physicist, Aerospace Engineer, or Mechanical Engineer with detailed knowledge of the state-of-the-art in all aspects of aerospace structures, to provide technical support for National efforts to develop and analyze aerospace system designs.
Job Summary: Lead and participate in the analysis and design of advanced structures to support the detailed development of conceptual air vehicle designs and subscale wind tunnel test hardware. Provide supporting analysis, both conventional and computational, to meet specific criteria. Task management from design concept, through prototype fabrication and integration with test facilities. Lead and mentor small engineering teams on differing design tasks.
- Provide technical contributions and leadership in the design and analysis of new structures to the development of strike weapon systems in the relevant areas of analysis, modeling and simulation, hardware, integration, test, and evaluation. (70%)
- Provide regular interface with Government sponsors, industry partners, and key Laboratory program and technical staff on activities related to the development and analysis of aerospace systems. (10%)
- Produce written documents and presentations of technical work. (10%)
- Lead and mentor engineering design teams (10%)

Required Qualifications: MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant technical discipline. Five or more years of applicable experience in structural analysis and design. Relevant areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): design and analysis of flight vehicle structures; knowledge of high-temperature (insulation and structural) materials; laboratory and field testing of components and systems; design for vibration and shock protection of electronics, and thermo-structural stress analysis. Proven ability to use computer-aided structural analysis tools. Consistent record of accomplishments of successful technical work. Demonstrated teaming skills involving engineering and analysis tasks. Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively interface with Government leaders and industry technical contributors. High initiative, motivation, flexibility, and interest in working in a fast-paced team environment.
Desired Qualifications: Experience in designing for high-temperature aerodynamic environments. Understanding of state of the art in supersonic/hypersonic flight vehicle structures and their manufacturing, fabrication, and application. Ability to use CAD tools.
Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel by vehicle, aircraft, etc. to government and contractor facilities as required. Occasional work in secure facilities.
Security: TS/SCI Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for an SSBI and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information. Preference for current SSBI. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
