Senior Mechanical / Aerospace Engineer - Propulsion

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an experienced, highly skilled, and well motivated Physicist, Aerospace Engineer, or Mechanical Engineer with detailed knowledge of the state-of-the-art in all aspects of flight vehicle propulsion systems, to provide technical support for National efforts to develop and analyze propulsion system designs.

Job Summary: Lead and participate in the detailed design and development of conceptual air vehicle designs and subscale wind tunnel test hardware. Provide supporting structural analysis, both conventional and computational, to meet facility guidelines and other test criteria. Task management from design concept, through prototype fabrication and integration with test facilities. Lead and mentor small engineering teams on differing design tasks.


  1. Provide technical contributions and leadership in the development strike weapon system propulsion in the relevant areas of analysis, modeling and simulation, hardware, integration, test, and evaluation. (70%)
  2. Provide regular interface with Government sponsors, industry partners, and key Laboratory program and technical staff on activities related to the development and analysis of rocket, turbomachinery, ramjet, and scramjet propulsion. (10%)
  3. Produce written documents and presentations of technical work. (10%)
  4. Lead and mentor engineering design teams (10%)

Required Qualifications : PhD in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other relevant technical discipline. At least 5 to 10 years of applicable experience in the development of propulsion systems and technologies including expertise in: advanced weapon systems development; solid rocket design; liquid rocket design; scramjet design; ramjet design; turbojet/turbofan design; turboprop design; solid rocket grain design; nozzle design; multiphase flow physics; rocket motor erosion; rocket motor casing design; high-temperature materials and structures; wind tunnel, laboratory, and field testing of components and systems; ideal versus actual performance assessments; and novel vehicle design and configuration. Must have an understanding of state of the art in the areas of: materials and their manufacturing, fabrication, and applications. Consistent record of accomplishments of successful technical work related to propulsion systems. Demonstrated teaming skills involving engineering and analysis tasks. Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively interface with Government leaders and industry technical contributors. High initiative, motivation, flexibility, and interest in working in a fast-paced team environment.

Desired Qualifications: A deep technical knowledge of propulsion system development. Experience with industry standard tools and databases, including: SPP, SIG, OTIS, MATLAB, CFD tools such as CFD++, the CPIA database, SPURC, VIPER, and other applicable propulsion, CFD, trajectory, or signature modeling tools.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel by vehicle, aircraft, etc. to government and contractor facilities as required. Occasional work in secure facilities.

Security: TS/SCI Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for an SSBI and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information. Preference for current SSBI. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
