Senior High-Performance Computing Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Computer Engineer interested in developing and applying new, leading-edge technology to RF, radio and EW challenges.
Job Summary: This senior level candidate will develop leading edge innovative systems & subsystems, with primary focus on the development of new concepts and software/hardware implementations for SDR applications including cognitive radio, cognitive EW, radar, digital beamforming, distributed sensing and machine learning. The ideal candidate will gain experience embedding statistical signal processing and machine learning algorithms into FPGA-based software-defined radios (SDR) and general purpose processors (GPP). Future RF systems will produce gigabyte-per-second amounts of data requiring innovative new approaches in real-time signal processing. Tasks also include the following systems engineering processes: system architecture development, performance metrics development, schedule, requirements development, and integration and test plan development.
Develop new concepts and prototypes for FPGA and C/C applications in communications, radar and EW including cognitive radio and digital array techniques.
Lead interdisciplinary APL and sub-contractor teams in all aspects of system engineering from concept development through integration and test.
Analyze emerging SDR technologies and applications, evaluate direction of the SDR industry and make recommendations to government and APL leadership.
- Work with APL staff and sub-contractors to put together cost, performance and schedule.

MS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering with eight (8) or more years of experience directly related to FPGA technologies in at least one of the following areas: sensor systems, communications, EW, or radar systems
Demonstrated FPGA development experience on mid to large scale Xilinx (UltraScale, Virtex, Kintex) or Altera (Stratix, Arria) FPGAs.
Candidates must have senior level experience with digital simulation, place & route tools as well as thorough constraint creation via static timing analysis.
Embedded software development and implementations in C
Technical knowledge of SDR systems as demonstrated by relevant experience in two or more areas related to radio design including RF systems, digital signal processing, modems, FPGAs, software, and/or modeling Demonstrated leadership traits such as problem solving, interpersonal skills, and effective communications with experience in team leadership, project management, and/or as principle investigator
Demonstrated ability to work at a conceptual level with limited task definition/structure
Active Secret or Top clearance or ability to obtain one.
Experience with high-level synthesis of FPGAs using tools such as Matlab HDL Coder, OpenCL, Vivado-HLS, Quartus, Mentor HDL Designer
Experience with placing Linux on embedded systems, and cross-compilation
Experience with EW systems, cognitive radio, dynamic spectrum access and/or policy based radio architectures
Previous experience with Navy or other DoD programs
Special Working Conditions: Travel up to 10%.
